“We’re under no illusions”: Mattia Binotto wary of Red Bull coming back stronger

While Ferrari were clearly blessed with the upper hand on their title rival Red Bull at the Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying Session, they do not want to bask in their glory as they were unexpectedly beaten by Mercedes’ George Russell to the pole position. Now, what had earlier seemed to be a relatively easier two-way competition between Ferrari and Red Bull, has turned out to be a full-on title fight as the Silver Arrows of Mercedes have joined the party at the front of the grid.
The results of the Qualifiers at Hungaroring came as a surprise for all, but mostly, it taught Ferrari a lesson that they have to be on guard always as the Mercedes Silver Arrows are rising and will soon try to catch up with them. Post the Qualis, the Scuderia Team Boss Mattia Binotto spoke about how their focus has to be on Red Bull even though they could not impress their fans in Hungary on Saturday. And besides that, Mercedes have also come up as a threat as they have massively improved their W13 from what it was at the beginning of the session.
Mattia Binotto says Ferrari will keep their eyes on Red Bull’s pace as they might bite back
During their run in the Qualifying Session, the Q3 segment was massively dominated by the two Mercedes as they were leading the pack, but during the latter half, Max Verstappen clinched provisional pole for once. Just after that, Charles Leclerc got the pole position as he was about six-tenths of a second faster than the Championship leader and the F1 title defender from Red Bull.
The provisional pole was being juggled by the frontrunners of the Qualis and at the very end, Carlos Sainz shone through and was named as the provisional pole-sitter. But before Ferrari could even heave a sigh of relief, George Russell put up a fantastic lap and grabbed his first-ever career pole to everyone’s surprise.
After the show-down on Saturday, it is evident that Ferrari will be wary of Mercedes during tomorrow’s race. But according to their Team Principal, they will have eyes on Red Bull too as the British team will come back stronger after their upsetting performance at today’s Qualifying. Speaking on this, Mattia Binotto said, “We’re going to be very focused on where the Red Bulls are. Not sure what happened to them today. We know it’s difficult for everyone.”
He continued, “Tomorrow, they’ll start a bit further back, but we’re under no illusions; they will be strong in the race. Its possible that we see a safety car in any phase of the race and they could be right back with us.”
