“What a fuc**ng embarrassment,” Ferrari fans left stunned after another Charles Leclerc ‘DNF’ in Baku; both Ferraris out of the race

Charles Leclerc has retired from the lead in Azerbaijan, following his teammate Carlos Sainz's own retirement.

Charles Leclerc has not had a happy past couple of weeks. He has taken pole position 3 times but on all of those occasions, he’s failed to win. He had a power unit issue in Spain and lost in Monaco due to a Ferrari strategic error. Today has not ended any better for the Monegasque.

Charles Leclerc began on pole but locked up going into turn 1. He was able to turn (and did not go straight on) but lost his lead to Sergio Perez. Max Verstappen was closing in on him. Then his teammate, Carlos Sainz, retired from a hydraulic problem on lap 10. Ferrari brought him in, with a 2-stop in mind.

It did not matter, because, on lap 21, Leclerc was forced to retire from the race from another power unit issue. His second in three races. With Sainz’s retirement, Red Bull will build up a massive lead in the Constructor’s Championship, and Verstappen will pull away further on the top. Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou also retired from the race. As it can be seen, the Tifosi certainly are not happy with the team.

Charles Leclerc: “I can’t find the right words.”

Charles Leclerc was able to make his way into the pits, so there was no safety car. After he had done so, he gave his thoughts on the matter. Speaking to Sky Sports, he was very disappointed with having another mechanical retirement, which only decreases his chances in the championship.

“Reliability? In the last 3 races, it’s been a problem. I don’t know what to say.”

Ferrari certainly cannot afford for this to happen over and over again, considering this is their 5th retirement of the season already. Carlos Sainz has retired twice before in Australia and Imola, and Leclerc retired in Spain.

“It hurts. I can’t find the right words. Now that’s 3 races in the lead where I can’t finish well. We cannot ignore these lost points. They are another 25 points gone.”

“For me, personally…again? It hurts.”

Later, on lap 33, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was running very close to Esteban Ocon and looked poised to overtake. But then he pulled to the side, with an engine issue. This means that 4 out of the 6 drivers running with Ferrari power units retired from mechanical issues in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
