One of Lewis Hamilton’s more absurd scandals, but one that still attracted media attention was the case of the spraying of champagne on a grid girl. Liu Siying, a grid girl standing to his right, was doused by Hamilton after he won the 2015 Chinese Grand Prix.

Feminist organisation Object said Hamilton had “abused” the grid girl by soaking her in champagne in the days following his victory in Shanghai. Despite the fact that Hamilton is not the first Formula One driver to have drenched a podium dignitary or grid girl in the past, it called his actions “selfish and inconsiderate” and sought an explanation from the world champion.

On being asked about his opinion on what went down on the podium of the Chinese Grand Prix 2015, Lewis Hamilton said: “I hadn’t really heard too much about it until today,” he said. “Obviously when you arrive you get a debrief as to what has happened during the week, so fortunately for me it has not overshadowed my week. Ultimately it was a great weekend, and generally my actions are through excitement.”

“This is Formula One, the pinnacle of motor sport and I’d just won a grand prix for the team. You should see it was a kind of a fun thing. I would never ever intend to disrespect or try to embarrass someone like that,” added the Mercedes driver.

The grid girl, Liu Siying wasn’t too offended or bothered by the incident on the podium. “It lasted for only one or two seconds, and I did not think too much about it at all. I think some foreign media are more sensitive about the topic compared to local media. I was just told by my employer to stand on the podium, and that’s what I did,” said Siying.
