A kerb is an edge where a raised sidewalk meets the road. The kerb on a Formula 1 track is different from the one on a normal street. In Formula One, the kerbs play a vital role in the race track. There are no definite specifications for the kerbs to be a certain way, they have different shapes and designs. Their primary role is crucial. It is a safety element. The kerbs make the apex of the corners and the outside visible to the drivers.
It slows down the drivers in the fast speed corners for safety concerns. In a scenario where a driver takes too much kerb, he will be slowed down. This is to ensure that the drivers run within the race track limits. However they are allowed to go over the track limits on two tires, but going on four can result in a penalty. The marshalls are appointed to make sure the drivers respect the track limits.
Formula 1 kerbs are made of metal and bolted to asphalt, they are easy to change and transport if needed. They are quite heavy and provide a great grip. The red and white kerb can often be noticed, in some circuits, they are painted with different colours or national flags. The best example is Monza, they have an Italian flag design. It depends on each track.

The kerbs in Formula One is to ensure the driver’s safety

There are different types of kerbs in F1. The Paint kerb is a non-slip paint on the asphalt, this is to ensure the drivers do not have a huge loss of grip in case of rain. The Standard kerbs are the red and white ones placed on the inside and outside of the corners. Carpet kerbs are made of artificial grass, if the drivers step on them they will lose a lot got grip, it is quite dangerous in the rain due to the water accumulation there.
Next up is the Scraping kerb, they are painted green and white, and placed outside some standard kerbs. They come with a lot of grip and are more aggressive. The Sausage kerbs are the most aggressive and tall compared to all the kerbs, they are elongated, with their length and size depending on the circuit. While their purpose is to ensure safety, the sausage kerbs have been criticised.
The sausage kerbs have caused many accidents because they are tall and aggressive. A couple of drivers have complained about this kerb and some of the circuits have been removed or modified to make it safer for the drivers. Kerbs establish an evident limit between the track and the outside. It plays an essential role in reducing speed in case of an accident. The FIA studies the shape and placement and goes over the details thoroughly to make it safe for the drivers.
