Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, was not able to make an appearance at the Sao Paulo GP, especially on a weekend when the team managed its first win of the current campaign.

However, despite him not showing up at Interlagos, the Mercedes Head of Trackside Engineering, Andrew Shovlin has made it known that Wolff is ecstatic about the result and indicated that he would be present at the final race of the 2022 F1 season in Abu Dhabi.

The current campaign hasn’t panned out the way Mercedes expected at the start of the season, as they were hoping to challenge for the title, instead have been left in a no man’s land in the third position behind Ferrari and Red Bull.

The package that Mercedes has got this year just hasn’t lived up to expectations, but because of the consistent efforts of the team to make the car better, they finally have a livery that is capable of going wheel to wheel with the top two teams.

What was witnessed at Interlagos was down to the tireless work that the team has put and Russell and Hamilton were quick to recognize their efforts during their post-race interviews.

While stressing on the same, Shovlin added, “It’s been a long journey over the course of the year. What a result today, to get both cars up there is fantastic. We’re delighted. It is the same car we had last week.”

It seems to be working really well, the sprint race gives you the challenge to get it sorted in one hour. It seems to be just in the right place. Same car we’ve had in the last three.”

Shovlin while dwelling on the team’s 2022 journey, further added, “It was a long road we had to work in terms of development and to understand the problems.

We kind of did write off the season early on when we realized how far away we were and realized the championship was out of reach. The focus was learning and understanding the problems. The result today is the product of all the hard work.”

Just like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, Shovlin is well aware of the hard work that the team has put in and has given recognition to it, but, while he applauded the team, Toto Wolff’s remarks were missed at the event.

Keeping that in mind, Shovlin while sharing his thoughts around the weekend, indicated that Toto Wolff, despite not being able to show up at the event, was elated with the team’s result and is going to show up in Abu Dhabi.

“He is one of those drivers who are comfortable out front, he is calm and knows what to do. When you have a shot at the win like that, to nail it on the first time is brilliant.

I am not sure [Wolff] will miss the next one, he is delighted. He has been in touch with us during the race, a shame he wasn’t here.”

Shovlin has pretty much confirmed that Toto Wolff would be present in Abu Dhabi, and with Mercedes having its boss back in the garage next weekend, the team would look to bring the curtain down on the current campaign with another victory to its name.
