“You copy the best you can,” Guenther Steiner’s straight as an arrow response to accusations of Haas being the ‘White Ferrari’

“You copy the best you can,” Guenther Steiner’s straight as an arrow response to accusations of Haas being the ‘White Ferrari’

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner

Guenther Steiner has been known for brutal honesty in the past few years and we saw yet another example of it ahead of the Hungarian GP. Haas have been one of the teams that haven’t brought in any major upgrades but have looked pretty competitive nonetheless. But, it was about time that Haas did update the cars to cope up with the changes brought in by other teams.

Haas has responded to the situation as they decided to upgrade Kevin Magnussen’s car but Mick Schumacher will have to wait for longer. It’s speculated that the German will receive his quota of upgrades by the Belgium GP. Another rumor that has sparked a debate is the fact that Haas has copied Ferrari’s upgrades and is being called the white Ferrari.

We all are well aware of the fact that Ferrari and Haas have a strong relationship as the Italian Giants provide the American team with their engine, gearbox and the suspension. Ahead of the Hungarian GP, Haas has decided to tweak  bodywork, sidepods, diffuser and floor in exactly the same manner as Ferrari, which has quite raised quite a lot of eyebrows in the paddock.

But, Guenther Steiner being Guenther Steiner has come out swinging amidst all the speculations and rumors. On being asked, he replied, “I expect to be fast. If somebody says we copy, then why should we copy the Williams? I mean, no disrespect to Williams, but it’s a completely different concept and they are behind us.”

“So if you copy something, you copy the best you can and, at the moment, it’s Ferrari and Red Bull. We are close to Ferrari, so obviously we’re going to see what Ferrari has done and copy that one.”

“We have the same engine as Ferrari, same gearbox, the same suspension, why would we copy anything else? And they’re winning races? So 1 and 1 is 2, and we are not stupid.”

Guenther Steiner might be right in terms of going down the same road as Ferrari but at the same time we’ll have to see if anything lies in the fine-print of the law to suggest if it’s illegal or not. It’s pretty sure that the FIA will have a look into it and we expect the decision to be out before the race.
