Toto Wolff and Mercedes, just like the other teams, had to wait before the historic Monaco GP got underway as the FIA was presented with a bizarre situation minutes before the race. It was forecasted that there will be rain during the race and that’s exactly what happened with heavy showers just before the race which left the FIA with no other way than to delay the race on a tight Monaco circuit.

The race director Eduardo Freitas had no other choice than to give teams the time to change their tyres from inters to full wet. The race was supposed to start after a few formation laps behind the safety car but as the showers getting heavy, a red flag was brought out to prevent any sort of fatal accident. This caused a delay that amounted to 65 minutes in total.

But, when we thought these were going to be the only two delays or stoppages, we were proved wrong yet again. We had a further disruption as Mick Schumacher crashed into the barriers coming out of Turn 15. This brought out yet another red flag as the barriers needed to be repaired. Thankfully, Mick walked away unharmed, but what this meant was the fact that we couldn’t have the full quota of laps.

Such a delay is very rare in F1 and Toto Wolff compared this one and off format of this rain interrupted Monaco GP to NFL. He said, “The format, how it was, was more an American football game.”

“You could get hot dogs and beer in between [stints]. But I think at the beginning that there was nothing else that could have been done.”

“The rain at the beginning was torrential. You need to give [FIA race director Eduardo] Freitas and the race directors the credit that this was a very difficult race to manage,” as reported by gpfans.

Monaco GP was as bizarre as it gets but it was an edge of the seat affair and anyone who said that it will be a boring race was made to swallow his words.
