Zak Brown confirms Daniel Ricciardo stays with McLaren in 2023; Australian asked to drive at Lando Norris’ level

F1 journalist Ted Kravitz revealed there are speculations connecting Alpine’s Oscar Piastri to a McLaren seat for 2023 after Daniel Ricciardo had a poor start to the Austrian Grand Prix weekend at the Red Bull Ring.

Several people quickly jumped on this idea because the relationship between Ricciardo and McLaren has fallen short of the mark. However, Ricciardo’s agreement with McLaren doesn’t expire until the end of 2023, so the 33-year-old driver would have to leave the racing team before then if Piastri joined Woking.

Additionally, it appears unlikely that Alpine would agree to “loan” Piastri to a competitor team like McLaren; a prospective opening at Williams seems rather to be a far more agreeable choice for the France-based racing team to pursue.

“We’re going to do whatever it takes for him, work incredibly hard because we know he can win us races. Can he do it? That depends on the car that we give him. But what we ask of him is clear: that he drives at Lando’s level, either slightly ahead or slightly behind. We have seen that when we give him a car capable of winning, he can do it. He admits that last year wasn’t a great season, but he won a race. So we have to find a way to unlock him and give him a car he feels comfortable with,” said Zak Brown, the CEO of the Woking-based racing team.

Although McLaren is clinging to fourth place in the standings after to Ricciardo’s P9 finish at the Austrian Grand Prix, it’s clear that McLaren is behind Alpine at the moment. More than McLaren’s arduous struggle to maintain their place in the constructors’ standings, Ricciardo’s performance is essential.
