Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is calling for new updates for the Meercedes W15 after back-to-back disappointing results on the track. Hamilton finished P7 in the season opener at the Bahrain GP and P9 finish at the Saudi Arabian GP. The Englishman is adamant that Mercedes needed to make significant changes to the W15 due to its bad performance in the medium-speed areas.
As W15 is not quite competitive against its rivals in some areas. Hamilton who just finished behind his teammate George Russell in Qualifying, in both races is suffering the most in the 2024 season. Hamilton is always seen complaining about the issues in the car. It will be interesting to see where will Mercedes introduce their first upgrade of the season, with both drivers urging for changes.
We've definitely got to make some big changes. We haven't made big enough changes, perhaps. If you look at the three teams ahead of us, they still have different concepts to where we are in some areas. So we've got some performance to add, that's for sure.Hamilton told RacingNews365.
The champion driver, who has been winless since 2021, will mark his final season with Mercedes in 2024. He was hoping to have an impressive farewell season, but it seems this would remain a dream of Red Bull and Ferrari is too strong for Mercedes to close the gap on.
Mercedes lost half a second per lap due to three corners in Jeddah
Mercedes did not have a good race at Saudi Arabian GP. Mercedes driver George Russell complained that the car was lacking pace. As he was not able to catch up the pace of Fernando Alonso Aston Martin. Russell added that they did not have High Speed compared to Mercedes rivals due to which they were losing a lot of time in High Speed corners.
Lewis Hamilton also faced similar problems during the entire race. Hamilton commented that he didn’t have pace as compared to McLaren. Oscar Piastri is regularly faster than Hamilton on Medium speed corners. Hamilton faced a similar problem with Norris also.
Toto Wolff commented that today was not the team’s day. Wolff then added that coming to Melbourne GP and Saudi Arabian GP have similarities. Due to this, the team needs to do a lot of work for the upcoming races.
