McLaren has successfully achieved the honor of being the most dominant team on the grid in 2024. The young lineup of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris has further enabled the team to score extremely well. However, Piastri opened up regarding the difficulty in keeping up with Norris in terms of racing on the track.
Lando Norris has scored two race wins in the 2024 season in a highly impressive manner. Oscar Piastri has also scored one race win after Red Bull’s incessant struggles. Piastri noted that in his rookie season, there were more occasions when he was unable to match Norris in performance. However, in the ongoing campaign, the Aussie was able to match the Briton’s pace on majority of the occasions.
So I think last year there was, I would say, more weekends, especially in the race, where I needed to find a step to be able to go with Lando. I feel like this year, a lot more of the time, I feel like I’ve been able to go with him, and on some occasions be a little bit quicker.Oscar Piastri told Motorsportweek
Regardless, a dominant chassis didn’t mean that both the drivers were able to perform on a similar level. Piastri claimed that the biggest thing for him was to repeat such impressive performances every week. Keeping up with such performances especially against Norris was the ‘most difficult part’ for the Australian.
I think for me the biggest thing has been doing it every week. But yeah, just doing it every single weekend is the difficult part.Oscar Piastri noted
Oscar Piastri confident in fighting for the world championship with McLaren’s 2025 chassis
Oscar Piastri has continued to score massive points over the race weekends and has achieved a P4 position in the drivers’ table. However, the Aussie has declining chances of competing for the world championship this season after Max Verstappen‘s tough racing. Regardless, Piastri believed that consistent efforts would enable him to potentially fight for the championship in 2025.
I think so, yeah. Like I said, I think the highs of this year I’ve been very happy with and I think have been good enough. There’s still room to improve, but I think it’s just doing that consistently which is the big part.Oscar Piastri added
McLaren’s performance in the 2024 season has posed the threat to Red Bull of losing the championship lead. The competition has bunched up at the forefront for the first time in the ground-effect era. Hence, the coming season will only increase in competition and excitement for the fans and drivers alike.
