Oscar Piastri suffered from some very disappointing situations at the British GP. The Australian had great hopes of competing for the race win after he started the race in pole position. The rain-laden circuit in Silverstone allowed Piastri to trump Max Verstappen early on and hold onto the race lead. However, a late race safety car infringement awarded the 24-year-old a ten-second time penalty as he lost the victory to his teammate Lando Norris. Now, the runner-up opens up about McLaren not intervening with team orders over the race and granting him the race win despite an unfair penalty.

Oscar Piastri‘s ten-second time penalty was due to erratic braking right before the safety car went in during the final stages of the race. The Australian suddenly slowed down his car from 218 kph (135 mph) to 52 kph (32 mph) within the span of a few seconds. This meant that Piastri used over 59 psi of brake force without any legitimate reasons. Regardless, the 24-year-old felt that he was unfairly punished and requested the team to swap positions with ten more laps to go and let them fight it out.

McLaren did not accept this possibility, as Lando Norris won his first race in front of the home crowd of the British GP. Now, Oscar Piastri comes clean on his demand on the team radio and pointed out that he asked the question as a last resort. The Aussie acknowledged that he was aware of the answer, but still wanted a small glimmer of hope in the final few laps. The 24-year-old reiterated that his ask wasn’t going to be fulfilled as there was no point swapping positions.

I thought I would ask the question. I knew what the answer was going to be before I asked, but I just wanted a small glimmer of hope that maybe I could get it back. But no, I knew it wasn’t going to happen.

Oscar Piastri said in the post-race press conference

Piastri accepted that there was nothing wrong with McLaren not accepting this demand and swapping the positions. Lando Norris drove a great race and remained flawless in his pace, and didn’t have to give up his rightfully earned spot. Even the 24-year-old acknowledged this situation and asserted that it wouldn’t have been fair on Norris to swap the places and give up his win on home soil.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Lando didn’t do anything wrong. So I don’t think it would have been particularly fair to have swapped.

Oscar Piastri claims he ‘deserved a lot more’ at the British GP

The British GP was run under very chaotic circumstances with a lot of safety car and yellow flag interruptions. To add to that, the low grip of the circuit meant Oscar Piastri had to drive very carefully and hold onto his lead. Piastri still led the race despite these circumstances and lost the race win due to one minor error. As such, the 24-year-old reckons that he deserved a lot more in terms of results in Silverstone, as he isn’t satisfied with the runner-up finish.

Oscar Piastri insisted that the situation hurt him a lot at the moment, as it was a completely different feeling from others. The 24-year-old emphasized that he deserved a lot more than what he got after driving a very strong race. Piastri added that the situation wasn’t in his control as he did not get the results that he felt that he deserved at the British GP.

It obviously hurts at the moment. It’s a different hurt though, because I know I deserved a lot more than what I got today. I drove a really strong race, and when you don’t get the result you think you deserve, it hurts, especially when it’s not in your control.

Oscar Piastri noted

Despite the circumstances in Silverstone, Piastri is still leading the championship against Lando Norris with just eight points between them. The Australian’s rather flawless performance throughout the 2025 season has helped him hold onto the lead. However, now, the 24-year-old must ensure that he makes no mistakes as Norris is readily available to capitalize on it and clinch the lead of the title.
