McLaren remains unaffected in terms of performance after F1’s new Technical Directive was implemented at the Spanish GP. The new TD aimed to clamp down on Woking’s alleged flexi-wing fiasco that was rumored to give them an unfair advantage. However, the team has proved that they have developed an exceptional challenger this time around, as Oscar Piastri clinched pole position from Lando Norris.

Many teams accused McLaren of using sneaky tactics in order to gain an unfair advantage over the rivals by using flexible rear wings, effectively giving them a mini-DRS. While the teams believed that Woking would get somewhat slower, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris occupied the front row and proved the naysayers wrong.

Now, Oscar Piastri has commented on the team and his performance at the Spanish GP Qualifying after barely achieving the pole position against Lando Norris. Piastri was over 0.209s ahead of his British counterpart as he lodged an extremely impressive final lap. As such, the Australian was extremely delighted to take pole for the main race.

Piastri labeled the whole weekend up to the Qualifying session as a good weekend, as the win will be all to play for on Sunday. The 24-year-old pointed out that the McLaren challenger remained ‘mega’ in its pace despite the new TD. Moreover, the Australian recalled his woeful outing in the 2024 season as he felt happy to achieve a great turnaround since the last time. Still, the pole-sitter accepted that his lap wasn’t perfect as he believed that he had more potential in the bag had he not made some errors.

Yeah, very happy, it has been a good weekend so far. The car has been mega, and glad to put in some good laps as well. It was a pretty miserable scene [here] 12 months ago, so to turn it around was good. It wasn’t the perfect lap, but happy with what I put in.

Piastri applauded the team and the engineers for their great efforts to help him achieve the pole position. The Australian recalled the woes of the 2024 Spanish GP and how it was a much pleasant start this time around. Now, the 24-year-old asked the team to have some fun at the main race in the afternoon, as anything can happen against Lando Norris and Max Verstappen right on his tail.

Nice work! Very nicely done. Quite a some around from last year. Well done everyone. Let’s have some fun tomorrow afternoon.

Oscar Piastri said on the team radio

Despite Verstappen being one of the biggest threats to Piastri in his championship ambitions, the latter shares some great traits with the reigning world champion. This has helped the Australian to remain on par, if not better, in performance than the 27-year-old. Now, the four-time champion starts from P3 right behind the two McLaren drivers as they might try to leave the Red Bull star in the dust.
