Oscar Piastri is undoubtedly the favorite to win the 2025 F1 world title. The Australian driver took yet another victory after an impressive drive at the Dutch GP. Piastri also gained from misfortune of his teammate, Lando Norris who retired from the race. However, the 24-year-old insisted that there was still a long way to go.
Heading into the Zandvoort weekend, Oscar Piastri led the championship from Lando Norris by 8 points, a marginal gap that could have been matched in one race. However, things have now changed. Norris was forced to stop his car due to a technical issue mid-race. This destroyed the Briton’s hopes of scoring any points. On the other hand, Piastri not only won the race but even took the fastest lap, adding 26 points to the board. Thus, the gap now stands at 34 points.
Fans would think that Oscar Piastri now has a safety net in terms of points against his teammate. Yet, the Australian driver thinks otherwise. The championship leader reckoned that there are still plenty of races remaining where he needs to push for victory. Piastri wasn’t comfortable with just a 34-point lead, highlighting that a single DNF could turn things around quickly, as was this case at this race with Norris.
No, I don’t think so. There’s still a long way to go. I need to keep pushing and trying to win races still. I wouldn’t say it’s a very comfortable margin. As we saw today, it can change with one DNF very, very quickly. So this far out from the end of the year, it’s not a comfortable gap.

Oscar Piastri ‘massively proud’ after Dutch GP triumph
Oscar Piastri has emerged as an incredible driver in Formula 1. Initially, the 24-year-old was struggling to defeat teammate Lando Norris when he first joined McLaren in 2023. Even last season, Norris had the edge on the Australian driver. However, this year, things have changed drastically, with Piastri gaining the upper hand.

The McLaren star asserted that he was full of pride to see how he and the team have managed to improve in the past year. The 24-year-old pointed out that there were a few tough situations in the race during Safety Car restarts. Nevertheless, Oscar Piastri managed to keep his calm and retain the lead through every single lap. While he was sad to see the team miss out on a 1-2 finish due to Norris’ retirement, Piastri insisted that from his part, he did everything right.
And through the race today, I felt like I had good pace as well and used that when I needed to, so I’m massively proud of firstly myself, but also the whole team around me in turning it around from 12 months ago. It was a really good race. Obviously, the restarts are always tough moments to get right, but I felt in control the whole time. Obviously, the ending was unfortunate for Lando and the team to not have a one-two when I think we really deserved it. But from my side, I’m very proud of the week we put together, being quick when it mattered.
Oscar Piastri explained
Certainly, Oscar Piastri is gaining confidence with every race. The Dutch GP weekend further strengthened his lead in the championship. On the other hand, Lando Norris would undoubtedly be feeling demotivated with the DNF. The difference in the situation of both drivers could play a role in the coming races with Piastri in a better mental state than the Briton. Thus, fans should not be surprised if the Australian driver manages to dominate the upcoming races and claim the world title.
