Oscar Piastri is currently suffering from a difficult spell in terms of performance during races. The Aussie started the season off with a bang and led the driver’s title for a good chunk of the year.
However, in the final stages, he has lost substantial performance and has lost the lead to Lando Norris by a single point. Now, the 24-year-old opened up on the unnatural reasons behind his recent performance slump.
Oscar Piastri was leading the driver’s title with a comfortable enough lead over both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. However, since his return from the summer break, he has been unable to keep up with the winning pace.
The double crash and ultimately the DNF at the Azerbaijan GP were probably a breaking point for Piastri, as he has been failing in results since then. The 24-year-old is unaware of the sudden problems as he insists that he hasn’t changed his driving style at all since the beginning.
Speaking on his recent struggles, Oscar Piastri noted that whatever worked for him in the past 19 races was now suddenly not the norm. He was unable to excel in the car with the same techniques he used to win before. As such, it was difficult to wrap his head around the sudden poor spell and why he could not keep up with the winning pace.
Further, Oscar Piastri asserted that the Mexican weekend was more about experimenting with the car and learning about its problems. The problems were such an extent that the Aussie had to adapt to a completely different driving style in the car. Because of this, he pointed out that the new driving style was unnatural to him and hence ultimately led to his downfall on the track.
What’s worked well for me in the last 19 races has needed something very different the last couple of weekends, and trying to wrap my head around why it’s been a bit of a struggle. But ultimately, Mexico was about trying to experiment with some of those things, because I would agree, I think driving the way I’ve had to drive these last couple weekends is not particularly natural for me.

Oscar Piastri labels his current struggles as a ‘learning experience’
Things certainly aren’t looking good for Oscar Piastri. In the season that was supposed to be his to win with ease, he is facing massive struggles to even achieve a podium finish now.

Moreover, Max Verstappen, who was trailing Piastri by over 100 points a few races ago, is now just 35 points away from him. As such, despite the difficulties, the Aussie labeled his current problems as a learning point which will be helpful to him later.
Oscar Piastri raised surety on the fact that his recent experiences were indeed a learning experience and he was learning a lot from it. He reiterated that, for some unforeseen reasons, he had to stick to a different way of driving.
Hence, the recent races were all about learning about the car and its quirks and trying to achieve a turnaround in performance as soon as possible and return to his winning ways.
It’s certainly been a learning experiences, that’s for sure, I think, for some reason, for the last couple of weekends it’s required a very different way of driving. So, it’s been about trying to [learn as much as I can].
Oscar Piastri noted
The 2025 season only has four races to go until completion. Oscar Piastri must ensure that he immediately improves his performance and starts contending for the race wins.
If he falls short now, he will lose his driver’s title at such a crucial stage. Piastri surely wouldn’t be too happy if he loses the title now after leading and dominating a majority of the season and losing it in the end.
