F1 drivers often fail to have a highly successful stint in the sport over the years. As a result, these drivers resort to some lower categories of racing after exiting the pinnacle of motorsport. Hence, infamous F1 pundit Peter Windsor revealed that one driver on the grid was actively participating in rally tests. The Australian confirmed that it wasn’t Max Verstappen at least.

Max Verstappen has suffered from major issues in performance in the 2024 season especially due to Red Bull’s declining pace. Multiple people believed that this would be the last straw for the reigning world champion to leave the team. Peter Windsor noted that he knew an F1 driver who was participating in rally testing.

However, contrary to popular belief, Windsor made it very clear that it wasn’t Verstappen.

I know of one Formula 1 driver that has done some rally testing recently – not Max Verstappen – in massive secrecy.

Speculations could be drawn from the vague comments made by the pundit. Several drivers are facing a performance slump in the ongoing season and could be testing their hands at rallying. Regardless, Windsor stayed true to the secrecy of the test and claimed that he would not betray it. However, the 72-year-old did mention that the driver was doing very well in the testing phase.

I would never betray that secrecy by telling you who it is, but he was good and did well.

Peter Windsor revealed ‘only condition’ Max Verstappen would be at Mercedes

Max Verstappen was continuously being considered for a driver role at Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton‘s exit. The Dutchman was loyal to the Austrian constructor as he declined any offers from Brackley. However, Peter Windsor noted that the 26-year-old could consider a move to the German carmaker. This was possible only if Verstappen was paired with Kimi Antonelli and not George Russell who would be the lead driver in Hamilton’s absence.

For me, the only way for Max to go to Mercedes would be if Antonelli was in the other car. I can't imagine he would accept George in the other car. I'm sure that would be one of your primary requirements.

Red Bull has continued to implement upgrades on the RB20 to provide the best outcome to Verstappen. The 2024 season has bunched up at the forefront in terms of competition. Additionally, this season has peaked in entertainment as the Dutchman faces stern competition.
