Red Bull have been the class of the field for the past few years. However, the Austrian giant has often found itself in the midst of driver troubles. On the other hand, Sergio Perez has produced underwhelming performances in the few races. With the team’s impatient track record setting sights on him, ex-Red Bull driver, Pierre Gasly, has elaborated on how his situation was entirely different from the Mexican.
Pierre Gasly began his journey in F1 as a Red Bull junior. On the contrary, Red Bull faced driver issues as Daniel Ricciardo left the team for the 2019 season. With a vacancy in Milton Keynes, the Frenchman was promoted to team. However, his tenure at the Austrian giant did not last for long as he was demoted to the Faenza-based sister-team before the Belgian GP.
Observing Sergio Perez‘s current status within the team, Gasly compared his situation with the Mexican.
I think my situation was very different to Checo’s[Perez], but I definitely think he’s under a lot of pressure at the moment . His problem at the moment is that he doesn’t feel the car. But it seems like he can’t get the performance he needs. I don’t know if it’s down to him or the team, but it’s clear that there’s something missing between the two at the moment.Pierre Gasly said in an interview as quoted by FormulaPassion
The Alpine driver claimed his situation to be vastly different than Perez’s. However, he admitted that the 34-year-old is currently under immense pressure, which can be attributed to either the team’s or Perez’s side as he is unable to get in the groove with the RB20.
F1 pundit gives his views on why Red Bull are still sticking with Sergio Perez
Witnessing the former six-time race winner’s slump in performance, fans have been questioning why Red Bull has been so patient with him. Moreover, the squad is known for its impatient track record in sacking drivers, thus the 34-year-old’s case seems to be an anomaly.
On the other hand, F1 pundit, Martin Brundle revealed why Red Bull has been so supportive of Perez.
We know that it’s commercially attractive to them[Red Bull], we know that he’s a good foil for Max[Verstappen]. He’s normally fast enough to do a good job and bring some relevant information - not fast enough to bother Max, particularly - and it works for them, and they have won both championships. But all of a sudden, they’ve got some rivals on their hands, and they can’t comfortably win the constructors’ title without Sergio being on tip-top form.Martin Brundle said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast
The Brit elaborated that the Mexican is a strong commercial factor for the team. Furthermore, he has often been good enough to bring home points and not challenge Max Verstappen, which might be the reason for their patience.
Despite Red Bull’s tolerance, it might soon run out as Helmut Marko would consider Perez’s future at the team during the summer break. Keeping everything in view, it is high time that Perez stars chipping in with potent performances going ahead.
