Mick Schumacher suffered from a disappointing end to his F1 career following mediocre results with the Haas F1 team. The German entered into the sport with massive expectations set on him, purely because of his father being the legendary Michael Schumacher.
Unsurprisingly, Schumacher Jr. was unable to follow in his father’s footsteps and had to quit the sport altogether. Now, his uncle Ralf Schumacher backs up his nephew and ponders over other drivers who are significantly worse than the former.
Following his F1 exit with the Haas F1 team, Mick Schumacher served as a Mercedes reserve driver for a couple of years. He also raced for Alpine in the WEC and achieved some decent results in the category. However, his reserve role was not continued beyond 2024 as Valtteri Bottas joined the team for the 2025 season. Now, the German has recently tested in IndyCar and achieved some notable results.
Following a positive outing in the IndyCar testing, Mick Schumacher’s uncle, Ralf Schumacher, recalled the former’s failed F1 stint and revealed the drivers who were worse than him. Schumacher Sr. reckoned that he did not want to delve into the debate again, but he still revealed how his nephew was a better driver than Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull.
I don’t want to go back over that now, but if you understand anything about it from my point of view and if you look at the careers of the drivers, including the current drivers who are in Formula 1, I think Mick would definitely be better than Tsunoda.
Ralf Schumacher said on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast.
Ralf Schumacher asserted that ex-AlphaTauri (currently Racing Bulls) boss, Franz Tost, would agree with his claims now, which he didn’t a couple of years back. Furthermore, Schumacher highlighted that Mick Schumacher was even better than Liam Lawson, who debuted for his full season this year initially with Red Bull and now with Racing Bulls. The German even noted that his nephew was better than Franco Colapinto, who is currently having a dismal season with Alpine.
I know Franz [Tost] might agree with me now, he didn’t back then, but, well, he’s better than Liam Lawson in my opinion, and Colapinto got off to a great start, but he hasn’t developed in the same way so far. And that’s why I would say that all three of them, in my opinion, are worse than Mick, even significantly worse.

Ralf Schumacher claims F1 team bosses ‘made a mistake’ not signing Mick Schumacher
None of the teams were willing to invest in Mick Schumacher despite his racing roots linking him to the legend Michael Schumacher. Junior was unfortunately unable to live up to the expectations set on him by his seven-time F1 champion father. However, Schumacher Jr. still had some great racing talent, which could have been honed better at a more competent team than the Haas F1 team.

Ralf Schumacher insisted that he wouldn’t understand the entire situation from others’ point of view, and people would also take his words with a pinch of salt because of his relationship with Mick Schumacher.
However, he reiterated that it wasn’t a great decision by the F1 team bosses to snub Schumacher Jr. from their team. The 50-year-old declared that the bosses made a mistake by not signing the young talent in their team and giving him a second chance.
can’t understand it at all, but now they’ll say again, of course, I’m his uncle, but it’s the same for me, I’m not criticising him now, but I don’t think it’s a great decision, America, um, but I think the team bosses made a mistake not to fall back on him.
Ralf Schumacher noted.
Certainly, a return to F1 might not be in the books for Mick Schumacher, especially after he was even ignored by the Cadillac F1 team, which is set to join the grid as the 11th team in 2026. Schumacher Jr. logged some impressive times in the IndyCar session and looks promising in the open-wheel racing category in the near future.
