Sergio Perez’s degrading performance mid-way through the 2024 season has put the driver’s career at risk. Yuki Tsunoda had come up as one of the prime candidates for the move up the Red Bull family. However, Milton Keynes seems adamant about retaining their current drivers’ lineup.
Red Bull declared that they would continue with the same lineup of drivers after a duel between Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson. Yuki Tsunoda had noted that it would be weird if Red Bull were to prefer Lawson over him. Regardless, as depicted from the events, Sergio Perez is given one last chance at Milton Keynes before being replaced in the next season.
RB’s CEO Peter Bayer has voiced his opinions over the entire ongoing matter. Bayer recalled Helmut Marko’s quotes and claimed that ‘swallow didn’t make a summer’. This meant that some good performances from Perez didn’t mean he could keep it up. As a result, if Tsunoda continued to perform well, there were chances of him being considered for Red Bull.
Helmut said it himself, in German you say a swallow doesn't make a summer. What it means is that if Yuki keeps racing on this level consistently, he will be considered for a seat in Red Bull Racing.Peter Bayer told Motorsport.com.
Peter Bayer reassures that RB ‘isn’t in a hurry’ on taking the final decision on the drivers
Multiple people believed that the energy drink manufacturing giant was in a hurry to make decisions on their drivers. However, Bayer made it clear that this wasn’t the case within the Red Bull family. The German also noted that RB could initiate talks with Liam Lawson after Tsunoda’s upgrade to Milton Keynes. Faenza had all options available at its disposal and hence wasn’t in a hurry.
It could also be an option [to] say that, okay, we now believe he's ready. So [then] we'll talk to Liam [Lawson]. We're not in a hurry, despite all the people [who] think we are, because we do have all the options in our hands.Peter Bayer added
RB has sustained a tumultuous performance in the 2024 season alongside Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo. However, the Italian constructor would attempt to start scoring better to provide Tsunoda with a realistic shot to Red Bull. The remainder of the season would be exciting to witness how the Japanese driver fares against Perez.
