During the Hungarian GP, Max Verstappen faced criticism due to his frustrating rants on radio with his race engineer. The Dutchman had a collision with Lewis Hamilton on lap 63 of the race, which affected his position. This was mainly because of Red Bull’s poor strategy that resulted in a crash and left Verstappen frustrated, losing crucial points. Milton Keynes expected the Dutchman to control his anger and frustration during the races and focus on racing.
Red Bull engineer Paul Monaghan expressed no concern over Max Verstappen’s language on the radio. He believed Verstappen set a very high bar for himself and for the team. Monaghan noted that the 26-year-old has consistently performed at an exceptional level, reaching heights that other drivers couldn’t match. Therefore, when he feels the team isn’t meeting these high expectations, it’s natural for him to express his frustration with strong comments or rants.
Max sets a pretty high bar for himself as well as us. Last year and races this year, he's reached a level the others have thus far yet to match. And as such, if he feels that we are not attaining his high bar, we can expect those kinds of comments.Paul Monaghan told RacingNews365
Paul Monaghan doesn’t worry much about whether Verstappen’s tone on the radio is nice or harsh. Monaghan reckoned that when the Dutchman expresses frustration, it’s because he believes the team isn’t reaching its full potential. The British engineer stated, Instead of focusing on how the 26-year-old communicates, Red Bull must improve to meet his expectations and improve to get better results.
I don't really have a strong view on how he presents it to us, whether the tone is pleasant or unpleasant. Look at it as if he is sensing that we are not getting the most out of ourselves as a team.Paul Monaghan added.
Paul Monaghan claims Max Verstappen’s comments not a ‘personal insult’
Paul Monaghan explained that Max Verstappen wants the best for himself and is an important person in the team, with a lot of visibility. Because of this, he often rants publicly and his comments are widely heard. The 56-year-old suggested that Red Bull should see Verstappen’s words as helpful feedback rather than personal attacks. He advises taking the comments as a chance to improve rather than feeling insulted by them. This would only help the team in learning from the mistakes they made and avoid conflicts.
He wants the best for himself, he is a fairly significant figure in this team and he has probably the most public speaking platform. You just got to take what he's saying as constructive criticism, not a personal insult and move on with it.Paul Monaghan stated.
Therefore, Paul Monaghan believed even though Max Verstappen get frustrated, it’s might be due to the team making errors. They need to address the mistakes rather than taking the frustration on personal level. Fans hope that the issues from the first 14 races will not be repeated in the remaining 10 rounds of the 2024 season.
