Max Verstappen qualified seventh and finished sixth in Monza, criticizing his RB20 for being imbalanced and referring to it as a “monster.” Recently, Red Bull has struggled to score points and secure pole positions, with the car not responding as expected, according to Verstappen. Despite these issues, Red Bull chief engineer Paul Monaghan stated that the team had “licked their wounds” after facing challenges.

Paul Monaghan responded to Max Verstappen‘s comments about the car being an monster. He explained that the team has addressed it’s issues and learned from it’s mistakes referring to the phrase “licked our wounds.” He emphasized that they are not just going to ignore the problems or hope things get better on their own. Instead, they are actively working to improve their performance and make necessary changes based on what they have learned as Azerbaijan GP will be the last chance for saving the 2024 title.

We’ve licked our wounds, learned our lessons. We’re not going to sit still from his comments or our performance in Monza and do nothing to bring here and hope.

Monaghan explained that there are various ways to address the issues with the car’s performance that were evident in Monza. He pointed out that improving the car involves looking at every part of it, not just changing specific components like the floor or the wing. The 56-year-old stated that the goal is to make comprehensive changes to improve the cars overall performance.

There are many ways to address the car’s behaviour from Monza, and it touches all the aspects of the car, not just whether we revise a floor geometry or a wing geometry.

Paul Monaghan explained the real test of their improvements will be on race day

Paul Monaghan said it would be foolish of them to simply ignore the problems of the car and do nothing about it. Instead, the team has taken time to recover from their issues and learn from their mistakes. He mentioned that while the real test of their improvements will be evident on Sunday, they have already made changes to the car to enhance its performance. The practice sessions resulted in a positive sign of their improvements, however the qualifying and race day would be the real test.

It would be naive of us to think that we can just leave it. So we’ve licked our wounds, learned our lessons. The proof in the pudding will be, obviously Sunday, but we’ve tried to bring changes to the car, and make it better.
Paul Monaghan stated.

Certainly, Paul Monaghan realized that the team couldn’t expect the problems to resolve on their own. They needed to actively examine and address the issues to regain their winning form. The effectiveness of their efforts will only become clear during the main race, where the pressure is highest.
