Red Bull has taken on the massive challenge to develop their own power unit in collaboration with Ford for the new regulations in 2026. Although Max Verstappen will be present to maximize performance despite the odds, the team still anticipates difficulties over the year. Team Principal Laurent Mekies opens up on the impending challenge and what it would mean for the team and Verstappen.
The new regulations are bound to be difficult for a majority of the teams and drivers. The likes of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and even Esteban Ocon have cast doubts on the simplicity of the refreshed regulations. Ocon even claimed that drivers needed to forget their previous habit of driving an F1 challenger and learn everything from scratch.
Now, Laurent Mekies declared an early warning for Max Verstappen and Co. in the upcoming season. The Team Principal highlighted that the team expected the first few months of the new regulation to be tough. Mekies did not mince his words while claiming that there were bound to be severe headaches and sleepless nights ahead for the entire squad.
Laurent Mekies even expects difficulties in getting the car out of the garage on a few occasions. Regardless, Mekies is confident that with the right crew at Milton Keynes, the team will find its way. The Austrian squad has the right facilities and the right partners to achieve success in the upcoming season. Max Verstappen and Co. must be patient and take some time before returning to their winning ways in F1.
We expect the first few months to be tough, And that we will have headaches and sleepless nights, and that sometimes we will have trouble getting the car out of the garage. All true, but we also believe that we have the right people, the right partners and the right facilities to find our way up. Be patient and give us time.
Laurent Mekies told De Telegraaf.
Laurent Mekies reveals ‘monumental challenge’ of developing Red Bull power unit
Red Bull has finally cut ties with Honda after a highly successful campaign with the Japanese giant and will develop their own engine from the 2026 season. The energy drink manufacturing giant has no prior experience developing engines and will certainly face a stiff challenge to go against the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari.

Laurent Mekies asserted that the team needed to ‘tamper expectations’ in the first half of the season, as they might not even win races in the beginning. The Frenchman warned people of underestimating the challenge of developing their own engine from scratch. Mekies brutally accepted that Red Bull was not going to develop a power unit like Mercedes and Ferrari in their very first season in Formula 1.
That also means that we have to temper expectations in the first part of the season. We have to make sure we get the chassis and the engine going. You have to look at it this way: the magnitude of this challenge is monumental. To develop your own engine from scratch, you shouldn’t underestimate that. If you think we are immediately on the same level as the manufacturers who have been doing this for 90 years, that’s not going to happen.
Laurent Mekies noted.
The 2026 season will be the true testament to Red Bull’s resilience and strength as a team in Formula 1. The team has overcome many struggles in the past, and they will have to do the same in the coming seasons. For now, the constructors will put their heads where it matters and ensure that they leave no stone unturned to keep up with their winning ways in the sport. Max Verstappen will definitely be crucial for the team as they hope to achieve success in the coming years.
