Red Bull Racing was in a state of upheaval in 2024. An investigation into Christian Horner sparked tensions within the team. Aero genius Adrian Newey ended his two-decade long stint to join Aston Martin. Nevertheless, Horner remains confident in the capabilities of the Austrian team.
Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley are two key figures jumping ship to rival teams this year. Newey takes up a key role at Aston Martin including a stake in the team. While Wheatley, who was considered as a potential successor of Horner, joins Audi’s Sauber as Team Principal. These two departures came at a bad time for Red Bull considering the fierce competition at the front.
Christian Horner highlighted that only two big faces were leaving the team. The Red Bull team boss claimed that Newey has had no input in its F1 operations since the Miami GP. He asserted that it was sad to see the two leave Milton Keynes. However, Horner insisted that the show must go on with the team having the strength to continue.
Red Bull not ‘rebuilding’ over Adrian Newey exit
Horner pointed out that Milton Keynes did not need to rebuild following the exits of Newey and Wheatley. Rather, Red Bull was in a stage of evolution, something it had planned for. As key personnel are often keen on new roles. Thus, Christian Horner insisted that the team got the opportunity to set its plan in place.
Max Verstappen managed to successfully win the 2024 title despite the situation at Red Bull. Milton Keynes managed to turn the tide in the last few races of the season. However, the long-term impact of Newey’s absence could expose a few shortcomings if Horner’s squad neglects even a minor error in the future.
