Sergio Perez has made headlines for the wrong reasons at Red Bull. Since joining the Austrian team in 2021, the Mexican driver’s future has remained the main topic of discussion as he failed to match Max Verstappen. Now, it seems that Checo might be finally running out of time at Milton Keynes.
Perez has not been able to keep up with Max Verstappen in the past two seasons. This was not a problem before as Red Bull was way ahead of the rest of the grid. However, with multiple teams in the mix for victories, Milton Keynes cannot afford such results.
It is believed that Red Bull gave Sergio Perez few races to demonstrate that he can fight alongside Max Verstappen. However, after Checo crashed out in Qualifying at the Hungarian GP. It seems that the Austrian team has no choice but to replace Perez as early as the summer break.
Red Bull no longer has patience for Sergio Perez
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner claimed that the team hoped Sergio Perez will gain motivation and race freely after receiving a contract extension this year. However, this has not been the case. Checo’s results have not improved and the Mexican driver is the only one from the top 4 teams to not win a race so far this season.
Dr. Helmut Marko made it clear that the Austrian team will make a decision on Perez’s future after the Belgian GP. Considering comments made by Horner regarding Red Bull being ‘one-legged’ because of Checo, it seems that the Mexican driver will be shown the door. Although, it is unclear if the 34-year-old will be demoted to RB or ousted completely.
Daniel Ricciardo is believed to be the most likely candidate to replace Sergio Perez. As the team has no interest in promoting Yuki Tsunoda, while Liam Lawson would need a year at RB before racing for Milton Keynes. Perhaps Lawson could take Ricciardo’s seat when the Australian moves to Red Bull, ultimately forcing Perez out of the grid.
Certainly, fans of Sergio Perez would be devastated to see the Mexican driver get sacked from Red Bull Racing. However, Formula 1 is brutal with no margins for error. Rather, critics are surprised that Perez managed to stay at the Austrian team for so long without many impressive results.
