Sergio Perez has been going through a rough patch in his F1 career. The Mexican is speculated to lose his Red Bull seat every race weekend. While such rumors have been there since the end of 2023, the 34-year-old has been nearing the modern-day age for retirement in the championship and reckons that his time at the top may be ending soon.
Red Bull brought in Sergio Perez in 2021 after his best season in F1. The Mexican soon got to grips with the RB16B and played an important role in Max Verstappen winning his maiden championship. However, the attitude towards Perez changed as his performance started to degrade every race weekend. This made him get up and close with the Austrian giant’s wrath as he was close to being sacked.
While he has often been criticized for his inability to perform, the Mexican revealed how he is currently in his final days.
It’s definitely hard [spending significant amount of time in F1 away from family], but it’s worth it. I’ve been fighting all my life to be here. I know that I’m towards the end of my career, because I don’t want to do it for too long. There will be a time, I don’t know when, where I will just have to say, look, I cannot live anymore with leaving my family all the time behind.Sergio Perez via The Times
The Mexican claimed that staying away from his family in Mexico has been tough. Though he admitted that this sacrifice has been worth it, he reckons that he may not be able to continue this approach for long as his family needs him to be there for them.
Sergio Perez deems rumors regarding Red Bull exit as pure speculation
Apart from this, Perez has been constantly battered for his inability to extract performance out of the RB20, like his world-champion teammate. Subsequently, speculations flooded the paddock at the Belgian GP that the Mexican’s sacking was inevitable as he started the race from the front row and finished in eighth place.

Despite such allegations, Perez remained at Red Bull after the summer break and gave his views on such rumors.
It was never in doubt. For us the main thing really is to focus on what we have to do and we have a lot of work to do. The rest has been pure speculation driven by different agendas. You can’t forget there are a lot of agendas in the sport.Sergio Perez via the same interview
The Red Bull driver asserted that his position within the team was never in doubt. Moreover, he had full faith in the Austrian giant that they would retain him. Perez claimed that rumors regarding his job security were just speculation with some agenda to unsettle him.
Regardless of Perez’s stance, Red Bull finds themselves vulnerable in the constructor’s standings as their lead has shrunk to a mere eight points ahead of McLaren. Moreover, at the current pace, the Austrian giant is destined to lose out on both championships which could be a fatal blow for them. If this certainly happens, experts might blame the Mexican driver for not being up to pace with Verstappen in equal machinery.
