Red Bull's decision to retain Sergio Perez for the remainder of 2024 raised eyebrows as the Mexican has failed to deliver this year.

Sergio Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 to partner Max Verstappen. The Austrian team was forced to look outside its driver pool after Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon failed to live up to expectations. Perez had a decent first season with Milton Keynes. However, things have not improved in the time since.

Checo has won a handful of races since joining Red Bull Racing. However, the Mexican driver has been overshadowed greatly by Max Verstappen. While Verstappen has made history in the sport in the past three years, Perez is often found stuck in the midfield against much slower cars.

Many believed that Red Bull will inevitably sack Sergio Perez mid-way through 2024. However, the reigning world champions made a shocking call to retain the 34-year-old. Nevertheless, it seems that Sergio Perez does not deserve to stay at Red Bull Racing for even one more race.

The Red Bull of old would’ve fired Sergio Perez long ago

Red Bull Racing used to be infamous for its lack of patience when it came to driver lineups. The Austrian team used to make ruthless calls such as demoting Pierre Gasly after just half of a season at Red Bull. As such, there are no doubts that Checo would not have survived this long if they had kept such a mindset.

Perez witnessed a major slump in performance last season. Red Bull still showed faith in the 34-year-old and gave him a new contract this year. However, even the new extension did not help matters as Checo continued to struggle against Max Verstappen.

Red Bull has given Sergio Perez enough time to show results. The Mexican driver simply has no more excuses for his disappointing campaign. As such, Red Bull should’ve promoted Daniel Ricciardo for the second half of 2024 to see if the Australian could do any better. Moreover, Perez’s results have impacted the team’s lead in the standings, which could potentially allow McLaren to take the Constructors’ Championship if things continue this way.

It seems that Red Bull is unwilling to sack Perez. This might be good commercially for the Austrian giant and F1. However, it could end up being detrimental in the long run. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Sergio Perez can bounce back and silence his critics after the summer break.
