The 2026 regulations of racing have received a lot of negative reviews from the Formula 1 drivers. Max Verstappen had already claimed that racing in F1 could feel similar to Formula E because of the regulations. Now, Verstappen’s former teammate, Sergio Perez, has opened up on the regulations and how racing could now be similar to their electric counterpart.
Sergio Perez is looking forward to returning to racing in Formula 1 with Cadillac following his disappointing exit with Red Bull. Perez did not race in the final year of the ground-effect era, and he can start afresh under the new regulations. Now, amid the criticism towards the new regulations, the Mexican has shared a similar opinion to Max Verstappen.
Speaking on racing under the 2026 regulations, Sergio Perez asserted that he was excited to see how the races unfold because that was the most exciting part. Still, the Mexican raised concerns over how the drivers would race out on track, especially because overtaking seemed trickier than ever. Perez asserted that he did not want to jump to conclusions, but the extra energy management meant that sport could feel like racing in Formula E.
I want to see how the races unfold, because for me, the most fun part is the racing itself. Right now, I simply don’t know how we’re going to race. It seems like overtaking is a bit trickier, that you have to manage your energy, and so on. I don’t want to jump to conclusions. But it could be similar to Formula E races.
Sergio Perez said, as reported by autohebdof1.com.
Sergio Perez predicts that racing could be chaotic, especially during the beginning few race weekends. Drivers will have to familiarize themselves with the new powertrain and how to manage it. Moreover, using the overtake button and the energy consumption would be very tricky for everyone. As such, it will be exciting to witness how the new regulations turn out for everyone involved.
I think it could be chaotic. This will be especially true during the first few races, where everyone will have to familiarize themselves with their powertrain, how to manage it, when to use the overtake button, how much energy it consumes, and so on. It’s very, very tricky.

Sergio Perez reveals ‘biggest regulation change’ that he will face in his career
The 2026 F1 regulations are certainly a massive change from the previous rules. The new regulations will adopt a 50% split of electric components in the engines. As such, many drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, already feel that the regulation shift is the biggest one he has witnessed in his career. Now, even Sergio Perez feels similar to Hamilton about the massive change.

Sergio Perez asserted that the 2026 regulations of Formula 1 were much different from what he was used to. He added that it was the biggest change he had experienced in his career in terms of regulations. Perez accepted that it was very difficult to understand what was happening with the energy, deployment, and other aspects of the new regulations, which remained very difficult.
This Formula 1 is really very different from what I was used to. I would say it’s the biggest change I’ve experienced in my career in terms of regulations. It’s very difficult to understand. What’s happening with the energy, with the deployments, all of this is extremely difficult.
Sergio Perez noted.
The 2026 season might prove to be difficult for many drivers at the get-go. However, many are dedicated to starting the year on the right foot and keeping up with development over the season. For now, Sergio Perez and Co. are managing expectations
