Red Bull signed Mexican Sergio Perez in 2021, with the hopes of making their second car string enough to win them constructers titles. The previous occupants Alex Albon and Piere Gasly failed miserably to earn them success. The veteran spent four years at RB as Max Verstappen’s teammate and had a roller coaster ride.
Year one proved to be a real challenge for the Sergio Perez and Red Bull made him take service of a physiologist after he struggled to perform in his first few races. He was billed £6,000 for a session that eventually helped him to get back to winning ways. The comeback was overshadowed by Max Verstappen’s impressive 10 race win season that earned him the title.
As soon as I arrived at Red Bull, in the first races, when I didn’t deliver results, [they told me] ‘What you need is a psychologist, you have to see a psychologist.’ One day I arrive at the Red Bull factory and they tell me, ‘Hey, there’s a bill for you’ – £6,000 from the psychologist.
Sergio Perez told the Cracks podcast (Via motorsport.com).
The veteran was quick to send the bill to (now retired) Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and when the latter asked him about the session, he pointed out that it was productive for him. Once the result started coming in with the second car, Red Bull was convinced that their second driver was over the mental challenges that stopped him from performing at his best.
I tell them, ‘Ah, can you send it to Helmut [Marko, Red Bull advisor]? He’ll pay it’. It was £6,000 for one call. Then Helmut tells me, ‘Hey, how did it go?’. I tell him, ‘Perfect, with this session we’re all set’. And that’s how we went on for three years, right? Already cured by the psychologist, the results started to come. Well, the call worked.

Sergio Perez shared the mental struggles in his final year at Red Bull
In his final season with Red Bull (2024) Sergio Perze yet again found himself performing worse than he has ever been. Though he tried to look for answer with the phycologist, this time he knew it wasn’t him but that car that was behind the poor results. He had no confidence in the car and couldn’t extract the pace needed to succeed.

In the last years, it was so much that I said, ‘Well, maybe I do need help, right? The results aren’t coming’. I looked for it everywhere, but deep down I knew perfectly well that when you have a car where you’re thinking about what’s going to happen, what it’s going to do, in which corner you’re going to crash, you can’t go fast.
Sergio Perez said.
The Red Bull garage giving up on the veteran also played a major role behind his poor performance. He felt they whole team was against him, after they refused to listen to his complaints about the car, till Verstappen made the same assessment. Even after that het got to drive the fixed car for one race and it was emotionally draining for him.
And on top of that you have your whole team against you. Publicly it was very difficult. I think only someone very mentally strong can withstand something like that.
Sergio Perez added.
The comments from the veteran are bold and it’s refreshing to see the veteran finally speaking out on his struggles ahead of his F1 return in 2026. Last two years at Red Bull hurt his legacy a lot and this season gives him the opportunity redeem himself and earn the respect back.
