Michael Schumacher might have exited the sport, but his legacy would always continue in Formula 1. Schumacher scored seven world championships and an astonishing total of 1566 career points. However, these points were in compliance with the old points system and the number of races back then. As a result, Sergio Perez has shockingly surpassed the F1 legend’s total points in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Sergio Perez scored a staggering P2 finish in the 2023 season after facing some difficulties towards the latter half. The new point system grants a lot of points to the drivers for scoring a top-five finish in the pecking order.
On the contrary, the point system during Michael Schumacher‘s days was much different than it is today. Regardless of the German’s retirement in 2012, the Legend continued to stay in the Top 10 of the points scored due to his dominant run in F1.
Hence, Perez’s P3 finish at the Chinese GP has increased his total career points to 1571. As a result, the Mexican driver finds himself in the eighth spot of the highest total points for drivers in F1. Schumacher is now ninth with 1566 points. However, according to sources, the German driver would have had an astonishing total of 4660 points as per the new point system in Formula 1.
Sergio Perez will soon overtake Nico Rosberg for points scored in F1
Sergio Perez’s impressive P2 finishes throughout the ongoing season have ensured the Mexican driver great points. He still loses out on major points due to being unable to overtake his in-form teammate Max Verstappen. Regardless, the 34-year-old will soon overtake the seventh driver on the list for the most amount of points.
Perez is extremely close to Nico Rosberg‘s 1594 total career points. The point disparity between the two drivers is just 23.5 points. However, the 34-year-old will have to work harder to overtake the sixth driver on the list, Valtteri Bottas.
Sergio Perez has a bigger target of finalizing his seat with Red Bull beyond the end of the 2024 season. The Mexican has more-or-less sealed his future with Milton Keynes beyond this season, courtesy of the dominant RB20. The reasonable demands put forth by the 34-year-old have further increased his chances of a contract extension. Perez wants to continue racing in F1 for at least a few more years.
