Sergio Perez‘s performance slump in the 2024 season has caught Red Bull in the crossfire. The team is continuously losing ground to McLaren in the constructors championship. Woking could potentially overtake Milton Keynes by the end of the season if the team doesn’t make any amends. However, Perez has secured his future in the team possibly due to the major financial backing from Mexico.
Red Bull decided to continue the season as intended with the same drivers’ lineup after evaluating Sergio Perez over the summer break. Perez scored a contract extension quite recently despite signs of an early performance slump. However, the 34-year-old will still have to rise in performance as uncertainty still looms over his career from the next season onwards.
According to reports by Motorsport, Red Bull’s loss in the constructors championship due to Perez’s shortcomings would be financially covered. The 34-year-old’s major backing from Mexico would reportedly cover the cost of losing the first position in the championship. As a result, the Mexican driver would continue to be considered for the spot as long as the wallets keep being filled.
Sergio Perez claims he will do his ‘best’ to extract maximum from the RB20
Red Bull’s struggles have further declined the chances of a Sergio Perez comeback mid-season. However, the team worked on the chassis over the summer break and is hopeful of strong showings in terms of performance. Perez noted that he was aware of the challenger’s potential, especially in the coming few weeks. Hence, he will attempt his best to extract the maximum potential from the struggling chassis.
I know what we can extract from the car in the coming weeks and we will do our best to maximize the second half of 2024.Sergio Perez said, as reported by F1i.com
The ongoing campaign has peaked in competition at the front with Mercedes also joining the running. The top four teams could have a battle for the championship towards the end. Red Bull will have to continue to put forth the best results possible to fend off against the in-form rivals.
