Max Verstappen is one of the most polarizing drivers in recent F1 history. The reigning world champion is never afraid of speaking his mind or going to the limit on-track. While this has divided opinions amongst fans, it has allowed Verstappen to stay carefree. Now, Red Bull Insider Stephen Knowles has pinpointed the Dutchman’s ability to push the racing regulations.

The four-time world champion is known to be an aggressive racer. When it comes to wheel-to-wheel battles, Max Verstappen almost never backs down. Rather, it’s the other car that usually succumbs to the pressure and backs out. If this doesn’t happen, then more often than not, things end up in a collision. This has been the case since Verstappen’s chaotic title battle against Lewis Hamilton.

While the FIA has often penalized the reigning world champion, it seems that he now understands exactly how far he can go without getting a penalty.

Stephen Knowles insisted that Max Verstappen had an incredible understanding of the sporting regulations, and how far the driver guidelines go. So much so, the Red Bull engineer claimed that Verstappen had made it a work of art in the way he goes exactly to the limit on-track without crossing the fine line that could get him penalized. The Dutch driver has mastered this skill, giving him a major on-track advantage.

He’s [Max Verstappen] got a really, really good understanding of sporting regs and the driving guidelines. And I know that’s also been covered a lot in that he’s kind of made an art form of learning exactly what you can and cannot do, what you should and should not do and really exploiting that.

Max Verstappen has ‘direct and honest’ chats at Red Bull

Max Verstappen is not someone who likes to pretend. The Dutch driver is always speaking exactly what he thinks. This has gotten him in trouble with the FIA over the highly controversial swearing ban last season. However, such a personality allows Red Bull to truly understand him.

Knowles claimed that he has really honest conversations with the reigning world champion. The entire Red Bull crew didn’t need to skirt around any issues to address it with Max Verstappen. Rather, the Dutchman encourages his crew to be direct to him. This not only creates a better bond between the driver and the garage, but also makes things far more efficient.

He takes a lot on board. We have very honest chats. He’s not the kind of person that you need to skirt around the issue with. You can be very direct, which I really appreciate.

Max Verstappen is a rare breed in Formula 1. The 27-year-old is more suited to the old school time of the sport, as he does not even try to pretend to be extra nice. The four-time world champion will always be himself and will not care if such an image doesn’t work in the world of PR. Nevertheless this honesty and transparency has only helped him gain a massive fanbase with millions cheering for him every race.
