Theo Pourchaire, who won the 2023 Formula 2 championship, hoped to secure a spot in Formula 1. However, despite his success, he wasn’t chosen for a race seat. This can be disappointing, as winning F2 is often seen as a stepping stone to F1. Sometimes, teams prefer more experienced drivers over young talents, and Pourchaire was disheartened by being overlooked.
Theo Pourchaire expressed how difficult it was to win the Formula 2 championship, which is supposed to be the final step before reaching Formula 1. He mentioned that everyone in the Formula 1 community was paying attention to the top drivers in Formula 2. They wondered which of the drivers would make it to F1 in the coming years. Despite his victory, Pourchaire is being passed over a spot in F1 in favor of older, experienced drivers like Fernando Alonso. He stated there was so much focus on F2 drivers, yet he wasn’t chosen to move up to F1, which was disappointing for him.
It is tough because I won the F2 [championship] which is the last step before F1. Everybody is looking at the Formula 2 drivers in the F1 paddock, which ones are going to drive in F1 for the next few years.Theo Pourchaire said on SpeedStreet Podcast
Pourchaire thought that he was considered for a spot in Formula 1, but not seriously as he hoped. This made him feel really disappointed and hurt. Even though he knew teams were looking at him as a possible F1 driver, it wasn’t enough to get him a seat, which was tough for him to accept. Working so hard and winning, yet still not getting a promotion, is tough for a young F2 driver to accept.
But I felt like I was considered, but not that much, and that hurts quite a lot.Theo Pourchaire added.
Theo Pourchaire asserts that the door to Formula 1 is not yet closed for him
Theo Pourchaire expressed that he didn’t think the door to Formula 1 was completely closed for him yet. He remained hopeful that an opportunity could still arise. However, he also acknowledged that Formula 1 is a very unpredictable sport where things can change rapidly. Hence, even when it seems like a chance is gone, there is always the possibility that something unexpected could happen.
I think the door is not closed yet, but you know, it’s Formula 1, you never know what can happen in the Formula 1 world.Theo Pourchaire stated.
Certainly, Theo Pourchaire, despite the uncertainty about his chances in Formula 1. He remained optimistic about his future in F1, knowing that anything could still be possible. Fans hoped the 20-year-old F2 champion would secure a seat by 2026.
