Sergio Perez had a woeful campaign in 2024. The Mexican driver even retired from the season finale in Abu Dhabi after spinning out on the first lap. Now, Max Verstappen has defended Checo amidst rumors of Red Bull replacing the 34-year-old next year.

After the Abu Dhabi GP, Sergio Perez confessed that he will be holding talks with Red Bull in the coming days. The 34-year-old hinted that this could be agreement to end his contract early. Liam Lawson would be the likely replacement for Checo.

Max Verstappen highlighted that he has worked with Perez at every race weekend since 2021. The Dutchman made it clear that critics have been too harsh on Checo’s performances during his time at Milton Keynes. Verstappen emphasized that the Mexican driver was not an idiot and he knew how to perform.

I work with him every weekend, week in, week out. I think people have been very harsh on him. Of course some weekends could have been better, but sometimes people have been very hard on him, because he is not an idiot.

Max Verstappen blames Red Bull’s car for Sergio Perez’s struggles

Throughout the past two seasons, Sergio Perez has failed to match Max Verstappen. The Mexican driver was the only one in the Top 8 to not win a race this season. However, Verstappen claimed that Checo has always been a great driver. The Dutchman was convinced that the difficult to drive Red Bull chassis made things tougher for the 34-year-old.

He’s always been a great driver and it was hard for everyone in the team because sometimes it was just very hard to drive the car.

Max Verstappen noted

It is unclear if Sergio Perez will remain in Formula 1 next season. If Checo is sacked by Red Bull, it would be unfortunate to see the 34-year-old exit the sport without a proper farewell. Fans would need to keep an eye on what happens next for Perez in the next few days.
