Formula 1 cars have been constantly developing a lot since its inception in 1950. The cars received multiple inclusions and upgrades exponentially to improve their performance and safety. However, one of the greatest additions to an F1 car was the Halo for the drivers as this inclusion has saved multiple lives since its addition.
People opposed the halo during its proposals, thinking that this addition would disturb the car’s aerodynamics and make it slower compared to before. However, as multiple occasions displayed, it proved to be one of the best and imperative additions to the modern-day racing car.

During the Belgian GP of 2018, Charles Leclerc in the Sauber was involved in a potentially disastrous crash with the veteran Fernando Alonso. Alonso’s McLaren experienced an unknown collision with the cars behind, causing the MCL33 to slide over Leclerc’s Sauber C37. The Halo stopped Alonso’s car from entering Leclerc’s cockpit and saved his neck from the collision.
I have never been a fan of the halo but I have to say that I was very happy to have it over my head today, I felt the impact and looking at the image of my car it is quite spectacular.Leclerc said, as reported by theguardian.com.
The tire-scratch marks on the Halo of the Sauber revealed that the addition was very important and life-saving. The incident could have easily beheaded Leclerc if it weren’t there. Hence, the Monegasque was highly appreciative of the Halo soon after recovering from the crash.
Fernando Alonso claimed that the Halo was worth it after saving Charles Leclerc
Even the Veteran Fernando Alonso was hesitant at first when the Halo was proposed in F1. However, after the possible disastrous crash at the Belgian GP, even he had to succumb to the positives of the addition. Speaking over the Charles Leclerc crash, Alonso claimed that the tire-marks on the halo revealed that they could have had easily been over Leclerc’s head.

In a situation where there was no halo, it wouldn’t be difficult to predict the outcome of the crash. Leclerc walking out from the incident without sustaining any major injuries from the horrible crash easily depicted the usefulness of the halo. Hence, both drivers were highly appreciative of the halo.
However, since then, the halo has been highly useful in a lot of incidents. The addition was highly imperative in the wake of the modern F1 cars as these accidents have been increasing exponentially after the addition. Therefore, everyone on the F1 grid highly appreciates the importance of the halo in case of a contingency.
