Carlos Sainz was forced to make way for Lewis Hamilton at Scuderia Ferrari in 2025. The Spanish driver was rumored to be in talks with Mercedes and Red Bull for a potential move. Though, ultimately, he settled with a switch to Williams Racing.
The 30-year-old has been one of the most promising drivers in recent years, including his previous stint at McLaren. Sainz has managed to pull off some impressive performances, particularly at Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc.
The Spaniard now moves to Williams, a team struggling in the F1 midfield. Carlos Sainz even rejected an offer from Audi for this seat. However, going to the Grove-based team is undoubtedly a step back in the career trajectory of the four-time race winner.
Carlos Sainz sees promise in Williams’ future
Sainz’s decision to join Williams shocked the entire paddock. Many expected the 30-year-old to join Audi or even consider a switch to Alpine. Yet, the Spanish driver showed faith in James Vowles‘ plans to get the iconic British team back to the front in Formula 1.
2025 will not be an easy year for Carlos Sainz. The former Ferrari driver will need to stay content fighting for points. Even a P7 result might be a great one for the Grove-based team. As such, Sainz will need to do away with his expectations of fighting for podiums virtually every weekend.
Moreover, the upcoming season might be nothing more than a write-off for Williams. The British team can really make a significant impact with the 2026 rules shake-up. A lack of in-season progress in 2025 could take a toll on Carlos Sainz if he finds it difficult to adapt to the midfield situation.
Nevertheless, Sainz is one of the most cunning drivers on the current grid. The Spaniard understands the what he has signed up for. It is likely that he will remain patient at least till the 2026 regulations come into effect. A major factor for the 30-year-old is the leadership of James Vowles. As such, fans would likely see the Williams house in order this year.
