When McLaren faced numerous struggles Formula 1 back in 2016, Zak Brown took charge as the team leader. The Woking-based squad was dealing with a financial crisis at the time. Despite many challenges, including rumors of an Audi takeover, Brown used his business skills to attract sponsors. With the money gained from these sponsors, the team improved their facilities. This significant development increased both the team’s overall performance and its staff, positioning McLaren as one of the top teams today.
Zak Brown in an interview stated that currently McLaren has a strong financial support from their sponsors and shareholders. He emphasized that they have great drivers and an excellent technical team. Brown also highlighted that the entire leadership and technical teams need the right resources, a strong fan base, and support from partners to succeed. These resources and support allow them to perform well and achieve their objectives. The level of performance demonstrated by the oranges was astonishing and now might be attracting more employees to their squad.
We've got our great investment from our shareholders and our sponsors. We've got great drivers, we've got a great technical team, and the entire leadership team, the technical team need the resources, the fan base, the corporate partner base in order to be able to do what they're doing.Zak Brown told Autosport
Andrea Stella often calls the team as world championship material and Zak Brown highly agrees with that. The 52-year-old believed that every department in McLaren, whether they contribute directly to the car’s performance or support it in other ways, is of the highest quality. He expressed confidence that all parts of the team are capable of contributing to winning a world championship.
Andrea uses the term world championship material and I'd like to think all departments, which feed into performance, either directly or indirectly, are all world championship material.Zak Brown added.
Zak Brown laments not giving Lando Norris ‘capable of winning’ car from the start
Zak Brown appreciated Lando Norris‘ performance in recent races. He stated that Norris has always been an excellent driver. The only reason it took so long for him to regularly compete at the front of the grid is because McLaren hadn’t given him a car capable of winning before. However, the team has now built a car which helped the Briton clinched his first season victory at Miami and is consistently running at the front. The 52-year-old expects more from him for the rest of the season as they’ve built the race winning car.
He's always been a great driver, the only thing that's taken so long is us giving him a car to be capable of winning in. Now he's running at the front on a regular basis, so I think expectations are clearly higher.Zak Brown stated.
Certainly, Brown emphasized that Lando Norris is an excellent driver, but McLaren’s car never allowed him to show his full potential. He currently sits in second place in the drivers’ standings and is just one race away from leading the Constructors’ Championship. Fans eagerly await for the season to resume after the summer break.
