The Italian GP was a thrilling race. McLaren had the pace advantage throughout the weekend with Lando Norris grabbing pole position. Ultimately, the Woking-based squad lost to race to Charles Leclerc. However, Norris and Oscar Piastri found themselves battling one another on more than one occasion.

In the later stages of the race, McLaren instructed Norris and Piastri to abide by the ‘Papaya rules’ against each other. After the race, McLaren boss Zak Brown was asked what was the meaning behind these rules made by the team.

Brown revealed that the Papaya rules essentially meant that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri must respect one another while going wheel-to-wheel. The McLaren CEO highlighted that the two drivers must avoid contact and give each other enough room. Zak Brown reckoned that Norris and Piastri followed the rules perfectly during the Italian GP.

Zak Brown asserts McLaren ‘focused’ on getting the best results every race

McLaren has come out as the biggest contenders against Red Bull in the battle for the 2024 title. The Woking-based squad made major gains in the standings this weekend with a double podium finish. Zak Brown highlighted that the team was looking to get the best result possible at every weekend. Brown admitted that Norris made a mistake which inevitably put him out of contention for the win.

We are just focused on getting the best results that we can, and we are doing that every weekend. And, Lando had his mistake - ran a bit long and that kind of put him out of contention.
Zak Brown stated

Certainly, McLaren had a positive outing in Monza. However, the British team failed to win the race despite having the best car on the grid. As such, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri would not be completely happy with their podiums. It remains to be seen how things pan out for the Woking-based squad in the coming weeks.
