Red Bull has partnered with Honda as the power unit supplier for many years in Formula 1. However, the team has been backed by Ford to create their own power units from the 2026 season onwards.
The new regulations will put forth highly exciting contingencies for Milton Keynes, especially after Adrian Newey‘s departure. Hence, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has voiced his opinions on the ‘impossible task’ of creating their engine.
Ford’s partnership with Red Bull will be a great help to the team in their job of creating the new power units under new regulations. Christian Horner reckoned that the Austrian constructor took their destiny into their own hands. Additionally, the Red Bull boss noted that apart from Ferrari, Milton Keynes was the only team to have their own chassis and engine department on the same site.
We are now taking our destiny completely into our own hands. Apart from Ferrari, we are the only team in Formula 1 that has its engine and chassis departments on the same site by 2026. Even Mercedes has two different sites.Christian Horner said, as reported by nl.motorsport.com
The task of creating the entire engine and the chassis from scratch was onerous even for a constructor as capable as Red Bull. Hence, Horner accepted the fact that the dream seemed ‘impossible’ but was still confident. The 50-year-old further added that the dream would pay off in the long run.
It may seem like an impossible task, but we think it will pay off in the long term.Christian Horner added
Christian Horner claims the ‘focus’ was entirely on the two Red Bull teams
Red Bull powertrains would have the capability to provide power units to four different teams on the grid. Hence, Horner added that they had been approached by multiple teams already for the engine. Regardless, the current priority lies on the two teams under the Red Bull family. However, the Brit was open to providing the engine to the ‘right partner’.
We have already been approached by different parties, some teams are scanning who gets the most competitive engine. But our focus is currently entirely on the two Red Bull teams, as we want to learn to walk before running. If something comes later, we are open to the right partner.Christian Horner noted
Red Bull’s struggles in the 2024 season have caught the team off-guard as they are desperately working to improve performance. Hence, Milton Keynes will have to work extremely hard on their own power units to put forth a better situation. Despite the results, the entire situation will be very exciting for the fans of the sport.
