Dustin Poirier has officially retired from MMA after completing a successful and memorable thirteen-year career in the UFC. ‘The Diamond’ entered his final UFC fight as the betting favorite, determined to end his incredible fighting career with a victory. Unfortunately for Poirier, Max Holloway delivered a near-flawless performance and secured a dominant unanimous decision victory against his former rival.
Previously, Poirier and Holloway had fought twice, with the Louisiana native emerging victorious both times during their competitive matchups. One of those memorable victories came when Holloway made his UFC debut at UFC 143 back in 2012. After UFC 318, many fans highlighted how Holloway finally avenged that debut loss by defeating Poirier during his emotional retirement fight.
Fans believed this result was perfect, giving Poirier a respectable ending to his incredible fighting career. Additionally, the victory provided Holloway with significant momentum, potentially boosting his position within the highly competitive UFC lightweight rankings. Irrespective of the fight’s competitiveness, Holloway showed great humility and respect towards Poirier after securing his victory.
Right after winning, he gave the spotlight back to Poirier, asking the Louisiana crowd to cheer for their hometown hero. Many fans and analysts like Aljamain Sterling suggested Holloway may have pulled back after knocking Poirier down in round one. Nevertheless, Poirier was pleased with his retirement fight and thanked his fans for the unwavering support.
Poirier expressed gratitude towards UFC and Dana White for allowing him to achieve his dream of becoming a superstar. Sadly, Poirier missed out on the symbolic BMF title twice, including a previous defeat against Justin Gaethje. Many experts consider Poirier as one of the greatest UFC fighter to never capture the undisputed championship.
Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway indirectly proves the capabilities of the UFC lightweight champion
At UFC 318, Max Holloway displayed exceptional striking accuracy, constantly pressuring Dustin Poirier while controlling distance throughout the bout. ‘The Diamond’ started aggressively but struggled to match Holloway’s high-volume pace, absorbing significant damage, especially during the later crucial rounds.

Holloway’s improved power and durability at lightweight helped him secure a dominant win and bounce back from his previous loss. In his previous featherweight fight, Holloway suffered a knockout loss against Ilia Topuria, raising doubts about his future.
After UFC 318, the Hawaiian superstar confidently declared himself a lightweight contender, expressing his ambitions for a championship title opportunity soon. Interestingly, lightweight star Renato Moicano highlighted how Holloway’s lightweight success further proves Topuria’s incredible skills.
After UFC 318 can you understand how good Elias Topuria is? Crazy what he did against Max one of the best to ever do it! Mdfker is one another level!!!

Before Holloway, Poirier was also interested in fighting Topuria for his last bout, but the promotion shut him down. However, many fans mentioned that it would have been tragic for Poirier to fight Topuria and risk getting knocked out.
Holloway recently challenged Topuria for a lightweight clash, targeting both revenge and an opportunity to capture the lightweight championship gold. Meanwhile, Topuria mocked Holloway’s BMF title with a sarcastic post, dismissing the Hawaiian’s recent UFC 318 performance.
Although top lightweight Paddy Pimblett seems next, Holloway argues his anticipated rematch against Topuria promises bigger ticket sales. The current featherweight champ and former rival Alexander Volkanovski has also backed Holloway to fight Topuria ahead of other lightweights.
Holloway became the first fighter to defend the BMF title successfully and demanded official BMF rankings recognition afterwards. Fans are excited to see how UFC capitalizes on Holloway’s momentum and maximizes promotional value around the prestigious BMF title.
