The WNBA has been trying hard to improve safety and security for its players ever since racism and hate-based narratives started last season.

Last season, when Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese came into the league, the WNBA saw a massive increase in attendance and viewership. Along with that came some unwanted noise, mostly racism and hate-fueled threats.
Some of it was focused on those who were involved in physical clashes with Clark. Racist fans appeared courtside with various signs asking the league to punish those players. At the same time, those players revealed that they received derogatory threats on social media.
Reese has been facing a lot of trolls on her social media platforms and has been trying her best to battle through that hate. She has openly talked about it and tried to clap back and take a stand.
In the opening game featuring these two young stars, some claimed that racist chants were directed at the Sky forward. An investigation was launched, but the league could not confirm those claims.
After that incident, everything seemed calm, and the WNBA All-Star weekend proved that the league was in a better place. That was until a fan decided to throw an NSFW toy onto the court while the Atlanta Dream were battling the Golden State Valkyries at home.

The incident brought the game to a halt as security and Dream’s management scrambled to collect the neon green toy and take it off the court. Attempts to locate the fan did not immediately yield a result, and the game resumed with both sets of players either in shock or joking about the situation.
WNBA fans lose their minds watching neon green toy flying across the court
The odd part about this entire incident was that broadcasting cameras caught both the neon green NSFW toy flying from the stands onto the court, as well as when it was lying beside the courtside seats.
Many questioned how such an object could be carried into a WNBA game, considering all teams are expected to have security staff going through everything fans bring to games.
They also questioned how that fan had the audacity to throw such an object onto the court, especially when the game was in session. Had a player landed on it, they could have been injured.
Either way, this lapse in security as well as poor fan control led many to admonish the Atlanta Dream. For a franchise that has played its part in questioning fan aggression at other arenas, to end up facing one was embarrassing. Check out examples of such reactions below:

Basketball fans have seen some weird objects thrown onto the court throughout the history of the game. For instance, someone threw chicken wings onto the court when Zion Williamson was playing. But this NSFW toy left fans baffled as they questioned its purpose.
Valkyries stage impressive win over Dream
Heading into their longest road trip, the upstart Golden State Valkyries were not in the form that had made them the WNBA’s beloved underdogs. Chase Center is their fortress, and their passionate fans have cheered them on towards wins.

However, their recent 2-8 stretch had many questioning if the Valkyries had lost their bite, and were expected to continue with their struggles when facing a formidable Atlanta Dream.
They did not, as the team kept pace with the opposition and even built a 7-point lead in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, the Dream came back fighting and even regained the lead, threatening to put the away team away for good.
But the Valkyries stood their ground, and their closing 5 fought on every possession to keep them tied. In their final possession, Italian Cecilia Zandalasini received the ball and drove to the rim and scored to win the game 77-75. A good win to shake off their losing form.
