Last Saturday night, the Arizona Cardinals’ newly drafted Marvin Harrison Jr. found his name involved in legal disputes for breaching a contract signed with a sports manufacturer, Fanatics. The aforementioned company reportedly filed a civil suit against the rookie in the New York Supreme Court.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Josh Weinfuss reported on Sunday, Fanatics has alleged that Harrison Jr. failed to fulfill the obligations of his contract and also publicly denied the existence of any such contract. The details of the contract as well as the monetary agreement between both parties have been redacted from public knowledge.
However, a source close to ESPN revealed the estimated value of the deal is $1 million and the contract includes various terms regarding autographs, game-worn apparel, signed trading cards, and some more marketing opportunities. The wide receiver signed the contract with them in May 2023, when he was still with Ohio State.
Along with Harrison Jr., the lawsuit also has “The Official Harrison Collection LLC” as the defendant. The Fanatics claim that they paid the Ohio standout receiver six figures as per the agreement, but he denied the contract and failed to fulfill the contractual obligations altogether, as per Joe Pompliano.
Pompliano also reported that the Fanatics are even threatening to produce evidence to prove the existence of the contract worth more than $1 million and also tried to re-negotiate the deal after entering the NFL.
Marvin Harrison Jr.’s dual pursuit in the sports industry
Fanatics, who are a leading manufacturer in the sports industry, began pursuing the contract with Harrison Jr. in 2023 before his 2024 draft projection took place. He reportedly signed a multi-year licensing agreement with them.
After heavy negotiation, the contract was officially formulated more substantially in May 2023. Harrison Jr. was represented by his father and Hall of Famer wide receiver Marvin Harrison Sr. The Fanatics also revealed that Harrison later asked them to match the offer of competing offers from larger companies.
However, the Cardinals rookie failed to show the evidence of those competing offers while negotiating. On top of that, he started negotiating with other sports trading card companies or collectibles.
