Jannik Sinner sealed his place in the final of the US Open after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets. The World No.1 will now face his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday (September 7) as he bids to win his third Grand Slam of the season. However, the major discussion after Sinner’s win has been about the time he was given a medical timeout before the third set.
Sinner began his match against Auger-Aliassime on fire as he was never broken, winning five consecutive games before the Canadian star won just one. But the second set started differently, as Auger-Aliassime dropped just one point in serve and used effective drop shots against the World No.1, which worked.
The 25-year-old kept hitting with precision and, for the first time in the game, broke Sinner to go up 4-3. Sinner then tried to retaliate, but the Canadian star held his ground to extend his lead before winning the second set. After that, Sinner, who had earlier shown signs of abdominal discomfort left the court for treatment.
He returned to the court, but his serving speed had reduced significantly. Nonetheless, Auger-Aliassime failed to keep up with his second-set momentum, hitting 10 unforced errors compared to four from Sinner. The Italian star wrapped up the third set, breaking Auger-Aliassime twice.
Fans on social media reacted to Sinner’s medical timeout as he took time talking to the physio and doctor before leaving the court with them. Some fans believe that Sinner used the medical timeout as a tactic to get into Auger-Aliassime’s mind before returning to the court to claim the third set straightaway.

Do better. There is nothing wrong with him. He just doesn’t like that he lost a set. I’m sure his pharmacist can fix him up.

Auger-Aliassime reacted in the fourth set, trying to impose himself from the baseline and found success as he won five break points across Sinner’s first two service games. But after Sinner survived an 11-minute aggressive display from the Canadian star, he broke him to win the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the US Open final.
The win was Sinner’s 300th career tour-level match victory. The 24-year-old is now seeking his fourth Grand Slam title and third of the season. Also, he has now reached the final of all the major tournaments this season, becoming the fourth man to do so after Roger Federer, Rod Laver, and Novak Djokovic.
Jannik Sinner admits there’s no reason for concern after dealing with abdominal discomfort in the semi-final
Jannik Sinner is set for a fifth consecutive final meeting with Carlos Alcaraz in events in which they have both featured. Alcaraz has won three of those finals, while losing just once to Sinner at Wimbledon. Ahead of their clash, he has now reassured fans that there’s no cause for concern about his physical health despite receiving treatment in the third set against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The World No.1 explained that it was a small twitch he felt while serving in the third set of the match. He added that after the medical timeout, he felt much better and it was nothing to worry about:
I just felt a small twitching after a serve when I served there in the second set on 4-3. After the treatment, I was feeling much, much better. At some point, I didn’t feel anything anymore. I was serving back to normal pace, so it was all good. Nothing to worry about. But I preferred to go off court because it’s in a different spot. So it’s all good.
Alcaraz leads Sinner 9-5 in their head-to-head record on tour and has won six of their last seven meetings. The former is in a better form at the US Open as he’s yet to drop a set, while Sinner has dropped two already. The winner of the clash on Sunday (September 7), will leave the tournament as World No.1.
