“Typical clown behaviour by Tony”- Wrestling fans lambast Tony Khan for preventing 33-year-old star from immediately joining WWE amid reports of creative dissonance in AEW
Tony Khan has decided to rain on someone's parade, pulling off an unclassy move on a former AEW tag team champion.

Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo, known as The Lucha Bros, don’t seem likely to arrive in WWE as imminently as everyone was thinking. Last week, while breaking the news on ‘WrestleVotes Radio’, the outlet confirmed that the Latino brothers signing with WWE was almost a done deal.
In fact, the marketing department of WWE had been given the green light to start producing merchandise for the duo. However, earlier today, Dave Meltzer noted that Tony Khan has imposed months of injury time on Rey Fenix’s current AEW deal. It’d bind the 33-year-old to be under an AEW contract for almost an year.
If that ends up being the case, Fenix wouldn’t be able to sign a deal with WWE until mid-2025. However, that’s not an issue for his brother Penta, who’s expected to become a free agent once his AEW contract expires in just about two months.
Technically, Penta could join WWE right away. Moreover, he had been pretty vocal about his creative differences with AEW. So one would imagine he’d be on his way to the Stamford-based promotion before the end of this year. That’s not a guarantee by any means.
Penta’s unlikely for a WWE move without having his brother Rey by his side. But, as mentioned above, Tony has tacked injury time on Fenix’s deal, which screams a move out of desperation. For the unversed, the AEW president did offer the Lucha Bros a new deal, but the high-flying duo denied it.
In fact, Penta had already told his AEW colleagues that he’s leaning towards WWE once he legally could. That must’ve caught Khan’s attention, especially after he failed to retain the former AEW tag team champions, who’ve been with the company since 2019.
Fans slam Tony Khan for resorting to petty ways for The Lucha Bros
Ever since the news has come out, the fans have been bashing Tony Khan left and right. They’re asserting that what he has done is typical ‘clown’ behavior. Many are claiming that AEW’s slowly becoming the place WWE was when the latter was at its nadir.
There have been a number of instances under Vince McMahon‘s regime where he didn’t let superstars leave, making them stay against their will. Similarities can be drawn from what Tony has done with the Lucha Bros now.
One could also put Ricky Starks under the same umbrella, who’s been absent from AEW programming since March despite being physically full of beans. He’s still under an AEW contract though.
