Tennis fans on social media have lashed out at Monte Carlo Masters organizers favoring Jannik Sinner after scheduling two matches, hours apart, for Danish Holger Rune.
The 2023 Monte Carlo runners-up faced Sinner hours after beating Grigor Dimitrov yesterday and then played in doubles a few hours later.
The cause of this bad schedule at the Monte Carlo Masters is rain. On Wednesday, while Rune was playing against Indian No. 1 Summit Nagal, already leading 6-3, 2-1, 40/Ad, rain disrupted the match. After hours of waiting, the court was left muddy, which forced the organizers to postpone his match to Thursday.
The following morning, he had to defeat Nagal 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 before facing Grigor Dimitrov in the evening. Dimitrov also faced the same rain challenge while playing against Miomir Kecmanovic.
The Dane defeated Dimitrov in the evening in a three-and-a-half-hour contest, only to face Sinner in the quarterfinals this afternoon without much rest. After Sinner, he will play in doubles, where he and his partner Taylor Fritz will be hoping to beat Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
Fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) believe that this congested scheduling is an attempt for Sinner to win against a tired and worn-out Rune.
So Rune had to play two matches today (one of them lasted 3 and half hours) and is up second tomorrow??? That’s just bad scheduling.A fan pointed out

Meanwhile, Sinner defeated Rune in the quarterfinals. Despite Rune winning the second set, fatigue made Sinner get the better of him.
Holger Rune lose to Jannik Sinner in a fatigued third-set
Holger Rune lost to Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7, 3-6 to crash out of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Danish youngster began the quarterfinal match on the wrong foot after losing the first 4-6, however, he pushed aggressively to win the second set in a tie-break.
At 2-2 in the second set, Rune split Sinner with a string of displays that saw him climb from 0-40 on his serve to winning five consecutive points. The same thing happened when they were both 5–5, but 0–30. In the middle of the second set, the crowd began to boo the Danish, and he reacted with an unsympathetic gesture, which forced the supervisor to take much time calming the situation.
Sinner will go on to face two-time Monte Carlo Masters champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.
