Tennis fans on social media have reacted to Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from the French Open due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. The Serbian was meant to play Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals but with his withdrawal, the Norwegian will go straight to the semifinals.

For context, Djokovic has been playing with a right knee injury for weeks before the Roland Garros. However, before he played in the fourth round against Francisco Cerundolo he needed to take anti-inflammatory tablets to help him win the match. But, during the match, the 37-year-old slipped on the court and was seen rubbing his right knee, after which he sought medical attention several times.

He later blamed the conditions of the court, which the ground staff should have swept as it was too slippery in the second set. Though he won the match he told reporters that he wasn’t sure about playing today. Today, Roland Garros confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament, stating that he withdrew “due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee (discovered during an MRI scan performed today).”

The news left many fans of Novak Djokovic in a mix of shock and fear as many felt it was likely the end of his season. The 24-time was aiming for his first title of the season but that will be postponed.

Nevertheless, before Djokovic withdrew from the French Open, he set a record by winning his 370 match at a Grand Slam event. The 37-year-old broke Roger Federer’s 369 Grand Slam victories.
