Carlos Alcaraz has qualified for the semifinals of the ongoing ATP Finals for the second time in his career. The Spaniard secured wins over Group Jimmy Connors opponents Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, and Lorenzo Musetti to book a spot in the last four.

His third round-robin win over Musetti ended the latter’s campaign. The home favorite was no match for the six-time Grand Slam champion, losing the match with a 6-4, 6-1 scoreline.

Alcaraz has improved his head-to-head record over the 23-year-old to 7-1. It was also his fourth consecutive win over Musetti, whose lone win came in their career’s first meeting back in 2022.

Musetti found himself in a tricky spot in the race to Turin as he needed to win the Hellenic Championship to grab a spot in the last eight. Because Novak Djokovic won the first edition of the ATP 250 event in Athens, Musetti only qualified because the Serb, also a seven-time ATP Finals champion, withdrew from the event for the second consecutive time. Musetti came as his replacement.

Fans criticize the Italian fans’ treatment of Carlos Alcaraz

Ahead of the Lorenzo Musetti versus Carlos Alcaraz match, when the Pala Alpitour spectators saw the former in the tunnel on the jumbotron walking toward the court, they let out huge cheers. But seconds later, the stadium reverberated with boos when they saw Alcaraz on the screen.

The boos for the Spaniard seemed louder than the applause for the Italian. It could be due to the fact that Alcaraz, in spite of being considered by many the most popular tennis player in the world at present, was up against a local player, as well as the fact that he is home favorite Jannik Sinner‘s arch-rival.

Reactions started pouring in on social media, with some fans criticizing the spectators for the way they welcomed the 22-year-old. But fans also saw the humorous side of it, saying the spectators booed only because they realized they would later be rooting for Musetti.

From Group Jimmy Connors, Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur have qualified for the last four. The Aussie won just one match but had a 49% game win-loss percentage to Taylor Fritz‘s 48%.

Carlos Alcaraz on winning a Grand Slam title versus ending the season as the year-end No.1 player

Because Alcaraz was undefeated in the round-robin stage, he will end the season as the year-end No.1. He was fighting for the spot with Sinner, the defending champion, who dethroned him after his back-to-back wins at the Vienna Open and the Paris Masters.

They are different emotions. Winning Grand Slams is always a goal: ending the year as number one as well, of course. However, securing the number one spot here is different because the tournament is not over, I still have a semifinal to play, the tournament continues. You can celebrate with your team, with the close people I have by my side, but right after that, you still need to focus on recovering, going to bed as soon as possible, being ready for the semifinals.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

While Sinner will lock horns with de Minaur in the semifinals, the second player from Group Bjorn Borg is yet to qualify. Ben Shelton is eliminated, while Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime have won a match each.

When you win a Grand Slam, the tournament is over, you can relax, do whatever you want after achieving one of the greatest things you can achieve in our sport, which is a Grand Slam. Different feelings.

Alcaraz is chasing his first ATP Finals title. Last year, he failed to progress to the semifinals, while in 2023, he lost to eventual champion Djokovic in the last four. He is also bidding to win his second indoor hard court title following the Rotterdam Open.
