Taylor Townsend paid tribute to the Black players for their performance at the US Open after her final loss in the mixed doubles category she played with Donald Young. The American pair were handed the main-draw wild cards and played impressively throughout the US Open, only failing to win the title.
Townsend and Young lost to Italy’s Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori after a closely contested final, losing by a scoreline of 7-6(7-0), 7-5 on September 5. During the trophy presentation ceremony on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Townsend was disappointed about not winning the trophy but expressed her contentment about being the only Black woman left in the tournament. She believes other Black people will be inspired to take up the sport after seeing the achievements of Black players like Young, Frances Tiafoe, and Coco Gauff in the tournament.
This isn’t the trophy that we wanted. But at the end of the day, I’m the only Black woman left in the tournament and there are two black men left in the draw. And ultimately, I just hope that Donald and I standing here today, Frances in the semifinals, Coco being the defending champion, just shows people that look like us that it’s possible.Taylor Townsend said

Tiafoe has reached his second semifinal at the US Open and is set to lock horns with compatriot Taylor Fritz on September 6. Gauff, on the other hand, won her first major last year at Flushing Meadows but failed to defend her title after Emma Navarro defeated her in three sets in the fourth round.
Fans slam Taylor Townsend for talking about race during her runners-up speech
Netizens are not impressed with Taylor Townsend‘s speech, for they feel it was unnecessary for her to talk about ‘race’. A few fans reminded Townsend of Serena Williams and Venus Williams‘ legacy while others pointed out that the court where Townsend and Donald Young played the final is named after Arthur Ashe, a former Black player.
Check out their reactions here:
The greatest who ever did it. Many, many more black players have achieved success. Past and present. Nobody thinks it’s impossible. She just loves to feel like a downtrodden victim.

What? Thinking the great Williams sisters put that narrative to rest. ??

This makes no sense with all due respect. The stadium is named after a black guy and Serena dominated tennis for 2 decades.

The stadium is literally named after a black guy named Arthur Ashe

Playing the race card, people like her are insufferable.

Yawn…

Why does it always have to be about race
?
Did they forget about the Williams sisters?
— the Truth (@UniverseNY) September 6, 2024
Didn't Venus and Serena already do this for decades?
— Bryan Tiller (@BryanTiller23) September 6, 2024
All due respect. Tennis isn’t the thing that proves what’s possible when we’ve already had a black President. Arthur Ashe, Althea Gibson, the Williams’ already blazed the tennis trail. It’s ok to just be recognized for your accomplishments rather than the color of your skin ??

Not only does she seem to be forgetting Serena and Venus, but I believe she’s standing in Arthur Ash Stadium!

We’re happy for your win. But Please understand a little bit about history and context before you inject race into your speech. pic.twitter.com/qvOkIGtO9K
Townsend played the singles and doubles as well. In singles, she was knocked out by Paula Badosa in the second round, while in doubles, she and Katerina Siniakova made it to the semifinals where Zhang Shuai and Kristina Mladenovic defeated them in three sets. The 28-year-old gave her best performance in singles at the 2019 US Open when she made it to the fourth round. She is yet to advance to a Grand Slam quarterfinal in singles.
