Rory McIlroy and a few of his teammates took part in a practice round at the Bethpage Course ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup. After the 5-time major champion bladed his wedge shot, fans present at the course started trolling him with “USA” chants.
McIlroy and his teammates will tee off at the Bethpage Course in New York this week, hoping to defend their crown and go back-to-back. The Northern Irishman, however, knows it is not going to be easy to tackle the hostile crowd.
In a video making rounds on social media, the World No.2 can be seen playing a shot over the green. He would use a wedge. He ended up mishitting his shot, leading to huge cheers from the fans present at the course.
As McIlroy watched his shot sail over, the crowd would start chanting “USA“. The chanting would get louder as the golfer handed his club to his caddie and started walking away from the scene.

During the Amgen Irish Open a few weeks ago claimed that his teammates should take a leaf out of the book of Novak Djokovic on how to tackle a pro-American crowd. He explained how the Serbian tennis great tackled the American fans at the U.S. Open during his matchup against Taylor Fritz.

"I watched Novak last night and it was a very pro-American crowd and he's been the best at handling that. He had to deal with it his whole life whether it's playing against an American or Federer or Nadal.”pic.twitter.com/jxVw47aPdg
European captain Luke Donald recently gave McIlroy and the others Virtual Reality (VR) headsets to try and simulate the crowd in New York. This was done to prepare his team to tackle the heckling they will face during the competition. Given what happened in the practice round, things will likely get more heated with the fans being in full voice during the weekend.
Rory McIlroy took a shot at Bryson DeChambeau after 2-time major champion warned about chirping him at Ryder Cup
While the Ryder Cup is now just a couple of days away, the mind games had begun a long time ago. After Bryson DeChambeau tried to get into the head of Rory McIlroy a few months ago, the 36-year-old finally responded to him.

During the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2, DeChambeau expressed that he would try to unsettle his rival and chirp in his ear all day if he got the chance to do it. This comment from him came after their showdown during the Masters Tournament.
In the final round of the Masters, McIlroy remained silent and did not speak with DeChambeau. The LIV Golfer pointed this out after the round.
This past weekend, McIlroy finally sounded off on his rival about his chirping comments. He expressed that DeChambeau only gets attention when he mentions his or Scottie Scheffler‘s name.
I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.

DeChambeau would also respond to this comment from McIlroy. The Crushers GC captain expressed that he simply wants some back-and-forth banter with him.

The 2025 edition will be DeChambeau’s third appearance in this biennial tournament. He has a 2-3-1 record from his 2 appearances. Meanwhile, McIlroy will be making his 8th start in this historic event. The former World No.1 has a 16-13-4 record with 18 points.
