Six-time winner of the Major, Roger Federer has officially withdrawn from the 2021 Australian Open over his injury recovery concerns.

Speculations about the Swiss tennis ace missing the opening Grand Slam of the 2021 season have become a difficult to digest reality as the agent and CEO of Federer’s management company TEAM8, Tony Godsick confirmed the news today.

“He (Federer) has made strong progress in the last couple of months with his knee and his fitness. However, after consultation with his team, he decided that the best decision for him in the long run is to return to competitive tennis after the Australian Open,” said Godsick.

Godsick further continued to reveal that he is looking to build a schedule for Federer starting somewhere around late February as the season-opening Slam seems too early to mark the return in action for the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

“I will start discussions this coming week for tournaments that begin in late February,” he added.

The delayed start of the Australian Open 2021, which is scheduled to begin on February 8th, had given organizers and fans worldwide gigantic hopes to potentially witness the evergreen 39-year-old Swiss returning to sporting activities after a year-long wait.

Federer, who has been sitting on 20 Grand Slams ever since his loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2019 Wimbledon Final, has not got a chance to increase his tally after his last official appearance at the 2020 Australian Open, losing to the Serb again, in the semi-finals.

The 8-time Wimbledon champion, Federer still has time and chances in the coming year to potentially win his 21st career Grand Slam. The Swiss will have his eyes set for his 9th title at the Wimbledon championships.

Federer, who had been training in Dubai during the off-season, was in a race against time to get fit for the opening Major. However, after undergoing two knee surgeries this year, the Swiss legend felt it is too early to venture into a Grand Slam as he has not yet achieved the desired level of fitness.

Although, the latest news has crushed the jubilation of millions of fans across the world who were hoping to see the Swiss in action, it is a decision that is going to best serve the tennis ace, in the long run, to return to competitive tennis in full throttle.
