Barcelona’s dream run in the Joan Gamper Trophy came to a screeching halt as they were drubbed comprehensively by AS Monaco at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. In what seemed like a clash of two well-equipped teams, Barcelona failed to take their chances while Monaco made no mistake in hammering three past the hapless duo of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena under the Catalan sticks.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen was handed over the captaincy while he had Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Inigo Martinez and Alejandro Balde ahead of him in the defence. Sadly enough for the Catalans, their defensive reinforcements were no match for the Red and White as they were razor-sharp in finding the back of the net.

After a cagey first half, the Ligue 1 runners-up from the last season got themselves ahead with Lamine Camara outpacing the Catalan duo of Martinez and Marc Bernal to open the scoring as Ter Stegen looked on aghast. Moments later Breel Embolo doubled the lead for Monaco with the German custodian once again being at the receiving end. At the end of the game, when Marc-Andre ter Stegen stepped up for a post-match speech, a handful of reactions from the players did spark a storm on X.

With wobbles from Ter Stegen, Hansi Flick decided to bring on Inaki Pena and he paid back in the same coin as Monaco’s substitute, Christian Mawissa got the third for the visitors. As Monaco soared, Barcelona‘s spirits deflated and for the first time in the last 12 years, the Spanish juggernauts dropped the prestigious Joan Gamper Trophy.

Here’s what X had to say about Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

Following the defeat against Monaco, Hansi Flick will have the all-important reality check ahead of the La Liga opener against Valencia on Sunday. With no trophies to show for in the last year, the Catalans mean business in the upcoming season with eyes on Nico Williams still looming large.

Joan Laporta had made his intentions clear that he will be pushing hard enough to bring Lamine Yamal and Williams on the same team just to reap the damage that these two are capable of doing together. However, with the goal-keeping woes piling on, there are new headaches on the block for Barcelona and their fans as they made it absolutely clear on X that Ter Stegen will need his guards up high.

How does the seasoned German goalie pull things back will definitely be a point of moot for the entire club but then he has done it before. Only time shall tell how Hansi Flick is planning to bring about a change to the trophy-less season of Barcelona with the resources at his disposal.
