Who can challenge the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner? Joao Fonseca is expected to join the two Major champions to form another Big 3 of tennis.

But at the moment, Davis Cup director Feliciano Lopez cannot see anyone challenging the World No.1 and the World No.2 for the tennis throne. Sinner and Alcaraz have reached a combined 35 finals, winning 26 titles, splitting the last eight Grand Slam trophies between them.

The numbers speak for themselves. I don’t have a crystal ball, but if you ask me today, in the short term… I don’t see that changing. I don’t see one or more players capable of challenging them for the Major titles and the World No.1 ranking, the throne of world tennis. In three years? Maybe a Sinner from Slovenia or an Alcaraz from another country will come along. Nobody knows… but I do see an enormous difference between the two of them and everyone else.

Feliciano Lopez said at the press conference

This season, the two young Grand Slam champions featured in six finals, including at the French Open, Wimbledon, the US Open, and the ATP Finals. Sinner won at SW19 and in the season-ending championships. It was, in fact, his second win in their last nine meetings.

Although the four-time Grand Slam champion finished the season on a high note, he couldn’t lift the year-end championships, losing the title to Alcaraz, who lifted eight titles from 11 finals, including the French Open and the US Open.

Sinner is not a part of Italy’s Davis Cup team as he wanted an extra week off. Italy started their title defense against Austria, knocking them out 2-0 in the quarterfinals to schedule a semifinal match against Belgium.

The South Tyrol native bagged six titles from 10 finals this year, the most on the men’s tour following Alcaraz. In their overall head-to-head matchups, the 24-year-old trails 6-10.

Feliciano Lopez on Carlos Alcaraz’s Davis Cup withdrawal

Carlos Alcaraz wanted to feature in the Davis Cup Finals, but unfortunately for him, a hamstring injury forced him to withdraw from it. He suffered this injury while clashing with Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals. Feliciano Lopez made his feelings known on Alcaraz’s withdrawal.

It’s a shame, because Carlos really wants to be here. It was a great opportunity to win the Davis Cup with him on the team. This year, there have been several strong teams that either weren’t here, or, as in the case of Italy, the overwhelming favorite, were missing their number one and number two players. Germany has Zverev; the United States, a world power, isn’t here… but oh well, there are some things you can’t control.

Spain, the winner of six Davis Cup titles, last lifted the title in 2019. Last year, they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of eventual runners-up Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

The last title that Alcaraz won this season was the Japan Open by defeating Taylor Fritz. Following his third ATP 500 win of the season, the six-time Grand Slam champion was forced to skip the Shanghai Masters because of an injury he suffered during the Japan Open.

At the ATP Finals, the 22-year-old played the final for the first time. Had he won, he would have taken home $5.07 million as prize money because he did not lose a match in the round-robin stage. This year, Alcaraz lifted two titles for the first time: he beat Alex de Minaur to win his career’s first indoor hardcourt trophy at the Rotterdam Open and later the Japan Open, where he also made his debut.
